Stephen Scroggins, son of the late F. D. Scroggins and Lela (Westbrooks) Scroggins, was born February 11, 1924 in Tallahassee, Alabama. He is the fourth oldest child and the third oldest son of fourteen children. He is the grandson of Stephen Scroggins [Add] and Nancy (Ross) [Add] Scroggins and the grandson of Jennie Robinson.
Stephen, affectionately know as “Steve”, departed this earthly life on Sunday, September 12, 2010, at Emerald Estates Assisted Living Facility after a lengthy illness. He was not alone. His daughter, Jacqueline Goode, and grandson, Darvun Carter and family were with him. September 12th also happens to be his belated wife, Parilee’s [44018] birthday.
Steve attended Elmore County Public Schools in Tallahassee, Alabama. He was inducted in the United States Army on February 19, 1943 at the age if 19. He served at Fort Benning, GA, Fort McClellan, AL, Camp Hood and Camp Swift, TX, England, and Camp Miles Standard, Massachusetts. Upon being honorably discharged on August 14, 1945, Steve relocated to Birmingham, AL and there he met his “wife-to-be”,
Parilee Stover [44018]. Stephen and Parilee were married on Steve’s birthday, February 11, 1948. From this union, four children were born: Jacqueline Ann, Stephen Douglas, Miriam Delores, and Theodore Vincent. Parilee preceded Steve in death on October 10, 2005.
Steve’s walk with the Lord began at an early age at Flat Rock Baptist Church in Tallahassee, AL. He was in regular attendance and active in Sunday School, and a member of the Baptist Young People’s Union (B.Y.P.U.). After relocating to Birmingham, he became united with St. James Baptist Church and served as a member of the Usher Board. After he and his family moved to Birmingham (Wylam Hills), he united with ST. Luke Baptist Church on Albany Street in Wylam. There he became an active member of the Usher Board. He later served as Sunday School Superintendent. When he and his family moved to Baltimore, MD, he became a Catholic convert and worshipped at St. Martin’s Catholic Church on Fulton and Fayette Streets for many years.
While in Birmingham, Steve worked very hard to support his family. His love for flowers and the natural beauty of shrubs and plants lead him to work for Keeline Landscape Nursery. Before moving to Baltimore, he also held jobs as a mattress filler and refinisher, furniture repairer, refinisher, and reupholsterer, warehouseman, truck driver, and mirror and glass cutter.
In August 1956, Steven began his career with the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene at Spring Grove Hospital as a Direct Health Care Aide. During his tenure at Spring Grove Hospital, he enrolled in an in-service nursing program entitled, “Graduate Psychiatric Aid Course”. This course was designed specifically for specialized training in the area of Psychiatric Nursing in addition to General Nursing Art. He successfully completed the course and graduated in the class of 1958; a class of 22 students. Steve was immensely proud of his accomplishments, especially being the first black male student to have completed the course at that point in time. After successfully completing the course, he went on to complete other courses in Nursing Art, Psychiatric Nursing, Anatomy and Physiology, Sociology, Clinical Psychiatry, Clinical Physiology, Pharmacology, and Bacteriology. In an effort to enhance advancement opportunity in his endeavor, Steve sought a transfer to Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center in June 1960. His request for transfer was accepted and there he remained for 18 years. Steve worked hard to prove himself each step of the way up the ladder until he reached his maximum category. During his tenure, he was placed in supervision on a full-time basis. He remained in State Service for 22 years. His responsibilities were challenging but enjoyable.
Steve’s hobbies and special interests included: flower gardening, bicycle riding, motorcycle riding, track walking, bowling, domestic traveling, reading, listening to all types of music, dancing, and horseback riding. He also considered himself an herbal health enthusiast. Last but not least, Steve loved people and he loved to talk to people. He spent a lot of time sharing the family history with his children, making sure they knew and appreciated their lineage and heritage.
Steve leaves to cherish his memory: one daughter, Jacqueline Goode (Charlie); one son, Theodore Scroggins (Natasha); four sisters, Louise Buckhanon, Ruth Cristobal, and Joanne Banks all of Alabama, and Miriam Bartley (Larry) of North Carolina; two brothers, Frank Scoggins (Lula) of Ohio, and Nehemiah Scroggins of Alabama; three sisters-in-law, Willie Ree Scroggins of Maryland, Betty Scroggins of Ohio, and Mary Scroggins of New York; five grandchildren, Darvun Carter (Evelyn), Chaweng Carter (Greta), Lisa Carter, Rashad Scroggins [
fb], and Tyon Grant; twelve great grandchildren which includes two sets of twins, and one great-great grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
