Worldandnation: Quiet ahead of the unknown

Worldandnation: Quiet ahead of the unknown: "Spc. Patrick Scrogin, 24, of Moberley, Mo., has some questions for his boss, Sgt. Maj. Richard Montcalm, 44, of Jacksonville. Montcalm is the highest-ranking enlisted man in the 2nd Battalion of the 327th Infantry. These are his troops he will lead to battle, and this will be Scrogin's first time. He wants assurance that Delta Company, which provides the battalion's mightiest firepower, with its .50-caliber machine guns and antitank missiles, will be on the job. 'Are you worried about something?' Montcalm asks. 'I'm scared, sergeant major.' 'It's healthy to be nervous,' Montcalm says. 'Scared is when you can't control your fear.' 'I can control my fear. What I f----- up is I looked at the picture of my wife and kids.' Sgt. Shawn Scott, 34, of Piney Flats, Tenn., has been listening. He is Scrogin's friend. 'I know, and I'm not going to do it,' Scott tells him. He served here during Desert Storm and he is very cool. 'What's really bad is I miss my dogs, too.' 'I miss my dogs, too,' Scrogin says, 'but I miss my Jeep more.' They steer the talk to dogs and cars. Lighter things, for a heavy night. 'I am going to get some rest, and I suggest you do the same,' Montcalm says. He walks into the dark. Scrogin speaks again. 'I heard Delta Company was going to leave us if we stop.' Scott scuffs the sand. It is time to get some rest. They move out in three hours."

Deceased Name: Wilma A. Dick
April 11, 1904-March 22, 2003

PENDLETON -- A celebration of life gathering for Wilma A. Dick will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Bishop Funeral Chapel. Vault interment will be at Olney Cemetery.

Mrs. Dick, 98, of Pendleton and Pilot Rock, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Juniper House in Pendleton.

She was born April 11, 1904, at Dawson, Ill., to William Henry [31868] and Lucy Alfarta Constant [32685] Scroggin . In December 1912, when she was 8 years old, she came to Oregon with her family by train. An uncle and his family had homesteaded between Albee and Ukiah, and the Scroggin family joined them there. Mrs. Dick attended school at Albee where she met her future husband. After later completing her education to become a teacher, she and Walter "Pete" Dick were married Feb. 19, 1924. After living on the home place at Albee for several years, they moved to a wheat and cattle ranch near Pilot Rock where they raised their family. They later moved to a ranch south of Pilot Rock and, when they retired, into Pilot Rock.

The Dicks enjoyed fishing and always managed to take their grandchildren with them. Mrs. Dick loved to garden and tend to her roses, and was an accomplished seamstress.

After her husband died in May 1983, she moved to Pendleton where she lived in retirement facilities where she took up painting and gave paintings to each of her family members.

She was a longtime member of the Pilot Rock Community Presbyterian Church and a member of Eastern Star.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Dearborn of Pilot Rock; a son, Bill F. Dick of Echo; a brother, Watt Scroggin of Pendleton; grandchildren, Suzanne Nekraszewicz, Glenna Maness, Bob Smith, Tina Bennett and Annie Tester; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous other relatives.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pilot Rock Community Presbyterian Church or a charity of choice directly or through Bishop Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 325, Pendleton, OR 97801.
