WW Falkner performing the last rites. Mrs. Jacobs came here with her husband and children from Elba last September. She was a sister of Mr. JW Scroggins, who also came here from Elba about the same time Mrs. Jacobs came. She was the mother of five children, the youngest, a three month’s old infant died on Thursday of last week, to who she was a mother indeed.

Women Killed In Crash Were From Oklahoma

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Authorities have identified two women who died earlier this week in a crash on Interstate 40 east of Albuquerque.

They are 21-year-old America Scroggins and her mother, 43-year-old Debra McNeal. Both are from Eufaula, Okla.

Bernalillo County sheriff's officials said the women were in a sport utility vehicle that collided with a van Tuesday night.

A judge has delayed a preliminary hearing for two brothers prosecutors say were involved in a shooting that injured three teens at a Halloween party.

Wednesday, Saginaw County District Judge M. Randall Jurrens allowed Dominique D. Billings and Isiah J. Scroggins to waive their right to have a hearing within 14 days so attorneys can prepare for the case.

Court officials have not set a new hearing date for the brothers, who remain in jail on $200,000 cash or surety bonds.

Oct. 29, three teens were wounded by gunfire, including a 15-year-old girl who took a bullet to the chest outside the Mapleview Apartments clubhouse, 1180 Genei in Buena Vista Township. The girl is expected to recover from her injuries, police have said.

Billings, 18, and Scroggins, 16, both of 1328 Essling each face three counts of assault with intent to commit murder and single counts of carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a firearm while committing a felony and carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent.

Attorneys for the defendants said they need more time to complete their investigation and to have witnesses take polygraph exams. v

Officers found Shanna Scroggins, 36, and Lepoldo Jaso, 50, Friday afternoon after Michigan state troopers contacted them Thursday, Sgt. Bryan Russell said.
Scroggins, who was arrested at her place of employment on Memorial Drive, was charged with child abuse.
Jaso was wanted on two charges of sexual conduct with a person under age 13, Russell said. He also was charged with evading arrest after he tried to flee officers at his College Main home, according to police.
Both remained late Saturday at the Brazos County Jail.

Boy dies after tragic accident

A 2-year-old boy died Monday, two days after his mother backed a truck over him in west Mobile County, near the Alabama-Mississippi border, authorities said.

On Saturday afternoon, Caleb Ryan Scroggins of Wilmer was in his grandfather's driveway on Harmon Williams Road when his mother reversed the truck and accidentally hit him, said Chief Rusty Holloway of the Tanner Williams Volunteer Fire Department.

The boy, who suffered head injuries, was airlifted by LifeFlight-Mobile to a local hospital where he died Monday, Holloway said.

Caleb's mother said he was a rambunctious boy who liked Batman, Superman and motorcycles.

'He was just all boy,' his mother said.

For Halloween, Caleb dressed as a dragon, and for Christmas he was going to receive dinosaur toys, Tanya Scroggins said.

'The best thing I could say, people could just see him and as soon as they saw him they were in love with him,' his mother said.

He loved his daddy, too, she said. 'Every time he would hear his daddy's truck coming he just ran to the door,' his mother said.

Scroggins and her husband, William Ray Scroggins Jr., have two other children, a 6-year-old and 4-year-old.

'This is going to be hard. All my family was supposed to come spend Christmas with us,' Scroggins said. 'I've got to try to hold it together for the other two.'

In addition to his parents, Caleb is survived by his older brother, Dylan Scroggins, and his older sister, Ashton Scroggins, both of Wilmer; his stepsister, Madison Avery Lowe of Mobile; his maternal grandparents, Mary and Roger Rister of Mannford, Okla.; his paternal grandparents, Shirley Lawrence of Wilmer and Raymond and Edna Scroggins of Mobile; maternal great-grandmother, Patsy Crabtree of Locust Grove, Okla.; paternal great-grandfather, Dalton Lawrence of Mobile; and numerous other relatives.

Dec. 8, 1938. They moved to Lubbock in 1943, where they were members of Tabernacle Baptist Church for many years. Mrs. Pruitt worked for S.H. Kress and later for Hemphill-Wells. Mary was a volunteer at University Medical Center for nine years. In 1992, Bill preceded her in death. She moved to Rowlett in 2002.

Mrs. Pruitt is survived by her children and their spouses, Hershell E. and Virginia Pruitt of Lincoln, Helen and Don Kamienski of Roelings, N.J., and Louine and Lynn Eisenbeck of Dallas; her brother, William P. Helen Ruth Pruitt Parker died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Oklahoma City, Okla. She was born on Oct. 14, 1926, in Decatur, Ala., and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Pruitt. After graduation from Riverside High School in 1944, she attended Bob Jones College in Cleveland, Tenn., from 1944-46. She was married to her husband, Charles G. Parker of Decatur, Ala., for 54 years. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Decatur, Ala., for 68 years. During her years of ministry in Decatur she sang with her trio in radio and evangelistic services, served at Central Baptist as a member of the adult choir, and assisted for over twenty years in the special education department of the Sunday School. She served the legal profession as an executive secretary for more than 25 years. After moving to Oklahoma City in 1995, Helen Ruth and Charles became members of the Surrey Hills Baptist Church where they sang in the adult choir. She also joined the Surrey Hills Garden Club, and enjoyed playing games with her neighborhood game club as well as substituting for her daughter's Bunco group. Her parents, four brothers and two sisters, and one son-in-law preceded her in death. She was born March 31, 1918, in Sedalia to W.M. and Clara A. Allen Hines. On Dec. 12, 1936, she was united in marriage to Forrest Hendrickson, who preceded her in death in March 1989. She had worked in a clothing store as a clerk and had been a member of Mt. Gilead Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Tim Scroggins, Springfield; a brother, Bill Hines, Mountain Home, Ark.; two grandchildren and their spouses, Dan and Alice Scroggins and Cindy and Kelly McCormack; three great-grandchildren, Jessica and Katie McCormack and Nick Scroggins. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Elmer Hines, Dale 'Curly' Hines and Richard Hines; and a sister, Eveleen Hines. Services were Saturday, Oct. 24, in Pitts Chapel with the Rev. Harold Hendrickson officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Gilead Cemetery. Music was provided by Allen Hines and Charlie Long. Mr. Pande was a rolling mill operator at Western Electric and was the owner of D & D Hauling Company.

URBANA -- Dorothy Anderson Brumleve, 54 of Urbana died at 2:34 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 20, 2005) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Memorial service will be 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St. Champaign, with the Rev Jim Linder officiating. Friends may greet the family from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Brumleve was born May 11, 1951 in Champaign a daughter of Scott and Annabelle Scrogin Anderson. She married Timothy R. Brumleve on May 24, 1974 at Chapel Hill, NC. He survives. Other survivors include her father, Scott Anderson Sr. of Urbana; four sons, Jacob Daniel Brumleve of San Francisco, CA, Joseph Timothy Brumleve of Glenview, William Scott Brumleve of Paxton, Abraham Anthony Brumleve of Urbana; one daughter, Catherine Rebecca Roland of Champaign. She was preceded by her mother. Mrs. Brumleve graduated from University High School, Urbana in 1969 and earned a bachelor's degree in Germanic languages from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1973. She graduated with a master's degree in German Linguistics from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1977. Mrs. Brumleve was an author of many historical and genealogical reference books, a computer programmer of educational software, a collector of antique sewing machines, a former member of the Champaign Urbana Weaver's Guild, and served as president of the International Atari Developer's Association. Dorothy wished it to be known that she was the "Postcard History Phantom" responsible for numerous picture postcards sent to area residents. Services for Hazel Sroggins Harrington will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 10, 2005 in the Chapel of Hixson Brothers, Pineville with Reverend Curtis Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be John Harrington, Jr., Josh Harrington, Robbie Nugent, Billy Nugent, Wiley Nugent, Steven Franks.

Mrs. Harrington, 74, of Pineville died Monday, November 7, 2005 in Rapides Regional Medical Center.

She was a member of Donahue Family Church and retired from J. C. Penny's as a Certified Drapery Specialist after 24 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alton and Sylvania Adkinson Scroggins; sister, Grace Scroggins Wilkinson; brothers, Ray, Foy [36821?], Dewey [14923?], Bob and Glen Scroggins.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, George Oliver Harrington, Sr. of Pineville; sons, George Oliver Harrington, Jr. of Baton Rouge, John Hamilton Harrington and his wife, Lisa of Walker, LA; daughter, Deborah L. Harrington Nugent and her husband, Wiley C. Nugent, Jr. of Broadus, TX; brother, F. M. Scroggins of Yazoo City, MS; four grandsons, Robbie Nugent, Billy Nugent, John Harrington, Jr. and Joshua Harrington and two great grandchildren, Westen Chan Nugent and Charlie Michelle Nugent.

Friends may call Thursday at Hixson Brothers, Pineville from 8:00 a.m. until time of service.

1947 - 2004

Funeral services for Mr. James Kenneth Scroggins, age 57, of Jackson's Gap will be Monday, November 8, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at the Comer Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Lynn Peters and Rev. Zenus Windsor officiating. Burial will follow in the Hillview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 7, 2004 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home.

Mr. Scroggins died on Saturday, November 6, 2004 at Baptist Medical Center, Montclair in Birmingham. He was born on March 19, 1947 in Alexander City, AL. to James Farrow Scroggins and Mary Moore Scroggins. He was a faithful member of the Comer Memorial United Methodist Church where he served the Church as a Sunday School Teacher, member of the Choir and several other capacities. Mr. Scroggins worked for over 30 years with Russell Corp. as a Manager of the Quality Control Lab, Plant #2, and Yarn Maintenance. He was an Eagle Scout and member of the Gideon's International. He graduated from Benjamin Russell High School and Auburn University; was an avid Auburn Fan; and enjoyed hunting, fishing, nature, and collecting guns and bows.

He is survived by his wife, Paula Champion Scroggins of Jackson's Gap; one daughter, Lisa Holmes and her husband Tim of Alexander City; his grandchildren, Jeremy Pappas of Alexander City, Anna Holmes of Mobile, Haley Holmes of Birmingham, and Skylar Holmes of Birmingham; his mother, Mary Moore Scroggins of Alexander City; two sisters, Nancy Scroggins Sewell of Alexander City and Debra Easterwood of Jackson's Gap; and one brother, Larry Paul Scroggins of Alexander City.

The family will accept flowers or contributions to The American Diabetes Association P.O. Box 2680 N. Canton, OH 44720 or to The Gideon's International P.O. Box 117 Alexander City, AL. 35011.

Woman views her recovery from crash as 'act of God'

2 sons were killed in June 4 accident near Prairietown

COLLINSVILLE - Holly Scroggins came back to work on Thursday, cutting hair as though her life wasn't virtually destroyed in June.

Scroggins, 32, was driving her Volkswagon Beetle near Prairietown on June 4. Her sons, 4-year-old Mason and 9-year-old Bryan, were in the back seat. Another driver, Timothy S. Barnhart, 46, tried to pass them in an SUV and crashed into their car. Both boys were killed.

It's been a long road back for Scroggins, who lives in Edwardsville with her husband, Bryan. She suffered injuries to her liver and had two blood transfusions. She had a brain contusion and suffers from some short-term memory loss.

She spent months in the hospital and had three surgeries on her legs. Doctors put pins in the long thigh bones and wired together her kneecap and ankle. She had a shattered heel and foot bones in the right foot, and dislocated and broken bones in the left. Instead of a cast, she had what she called 'an erector set' pinning her legs in place.

Scroggins calls her recovery 'truly an act of God.'

'There's no one who loses their children and goes unscathed,' she said. 'The Lord gives us strength.'

Thursday was her first day back at The Hair Studio in Collinsville, but she's not working full-time -- only one day a week to start. She rested on a stool nearby in between cutting clients' hair.

You can't tell from looking at her that she was seriously injured, and she said the medical care she received was top notch. 'It's amazing what they can do,' she said.

Still, she continues to take physical therapy and grieves for the loss of her children. But she insists she and her husband are doing well, and she said she has forgiven Barnhart, who still has not been charged in the accident.

'People are so quick to justify us and condemn him,' Scroggins said. 'I know he didn't set out that day to kill my children.... I pray this changes him. The way he's lived his life up until now, from what I've been told, was not good.'

Barnhart was driving on a revoked license when he hit the Scroggins' car, and had an unrelated DUI charge pending in another county. He still is recovering from his injuries, and the case is still pending, according to Lt. Brad Wells of the Madison County Sheriff's Department. Charges are still 'absolutely' a possibility, Wells said.

'That's not anything I'm in control of, and worrying about it doesn't do any good,' Scroggins said. 'He has to answer for his actions, of course. Even though he made bad choices, he still is human.... I want him to change, and I pray this changes him. I don't want this to happen to anyone else.'

Scroggins said the community rallied around her in her recovery, especially her church, Wood River Assembly of God. Her co-workers at The Hair Studio hung a banner outside the shop on Vandalia Road that read, 'Please pray for Holly and her family.'

'They're very thankful I'm back,' she said of her co-workers, who also sold handmade jewelry to raise money to help the family through the crisis.

Scroggins said she expects Barnhart will eventually be charged, but refuses to dwell on it.

'If I do, it controls me,' she said. 'My boys are gone either way.'
