She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Edwin Warden; a step-son, Orville E. Warden; two brothers, Samuel H. Owens, Latheniel H. Owens; her father, Samuel Herbert Owens, Sr. and her mother, Leslie Lee Scroggins Owens. She is survived by three daughters, Deborah Beanco of Pass Christian, Charlotte Diane Taylor of Fulton, NY, and Rhonda Hurst of Pass Christian; two sons, Maurice G. Clements, Jr. of Pass Christian, and Michael Vernon Clements of Lucedale; two step-daughters, Darlene Thurman of Gulfport and Dixie Huch of Long Beach; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Born a full-blood Cherokee Indian Feb. 6, 1917, in Delaware County, to Samuel Curtis and Dorcas (Fox) Scuggins, she attended school in Butler until age 10, then went to Sequoyah Indian Boarding School in Tahlequah.
She was a cook at McAlester High School and McAlester Regional Health Center and retired when she was 70 years old. She was a member of the Main and Oklahoma Church of Christ of McAlester, was involved with Meals on Wheels, summer church camp, Ladies Bible Group and Women?s Indian Club.
A lifelong Democrat, she enjoyed sports, including baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, football and basketball, gardening, sewing, puzzles and cooking.

Mary Louise (Raven) Scruggins, 88, widow of Mr. Taft "Chief" Scruggins, died at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2008 in the Cherokee County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, in the Memory Chapel of The Arnold Moore Funeral Residence. Pastor G. Avery Scruggins, her grandson, and the Rev. Dale Nielsen will be the officiants. Committal prayers and interment will be directed in the Silver Lake Cemetery by The Arnold Moore Funeral Service.
Mrs. Scruggins will lie in state in the Drawing Rooms of The Arnold Moore Funeral Residence where family and friends may call for their visitation until the service hour.
An Oklahoma native, Mary Louise Raven was born March 12, 1919 at Fish Creek, near Bartlesville, in Washington County. She was the daughter of John L. Raven and Lucinda (White) Raven. She was reared and completed her education in the Dewey Public Schools. She was united in marriage to Taft "Chief" Scruggins on December 20, 1935 at Pawhuska, Oklahoma and they established their first home in Bartlesville. Mary was a homemaker and Mr. Scruggins was an employee of the Phillips Petroleum Company and later became active in industrial iron construction which took them to various parts of the United States. They moved to the Grove, Oklahoma community in 1972. Mr. Scruggins preceded her in death on May 18, 1991 in Grove and she remained a resident of Grove living in retirement. She had recently moved to Tahlequah to be near family.
Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Bette Scruggins of Tahlequah; three grandchildren, Jonna S. Burkett and husband, Justin; Bradley C. Scruggins, G. Avery Scruggins and wife, Kelly; six great grandchildren, Tory Raven Walton, Kazmira Kalain Lowry and Britney Mariah Scruggins; Natashsia Marie Finn, Jennifer Robin Chanate and Cage Avery Scruggins; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her husband and father and mother, five sisters, Edna Pratt, Sue Schmidt, Cecile Schmidt, Gatsey Bowker, and Irene Gable; and two brothers, Pete Edwin Raven and James "Jimmy" Leroy Raven, preceded her in death.

Message: Mary S. Johnson Mrs. Mary Sue Johnson, 97, of Florence, passed away March 8, 2008, at Southridge Place. The graveside service will be Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. Dr. Carl Gebhardt and the Rev. Gary Formby will be officiating. There will be a family memorial service in June. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Johnson Sr. She was a graduate of the University of Alabama and a big fan of the Alabama teams. She was a member of First Christian Church. She was an avid rose gardener who shared her flowers with everyone. She was also a great cook. Mrs. Johnson was a very gracious lady and full of hospitality. She celebrated every holiday with her family, and she will be greatly missed. She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Scroggins (Derrell), Florence; a son, Dr. Lloyd Johnson Jr. (Joan), Florence; grandchildren, Mary Sue Ridgway (Alan), Dr. Lloyd Johnson III (Holly), Kristi Johnson Smith (Tim), Dr. Todd Johnson (Betsy), Ashley Johnson; great-grandchildren, James Alan Ridgway, Derrell Sidney Ridgway, Melissa Suzanne Ridgway, Alex and Lily Johnson, Ella and Sienna Smith and Gabrielle Johnson. Rightnowar on March 1, 1943, in DeRidder, La.; he preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 2008.Faye was a long time employee of the Security Bank and later Boatmans Bank, where she served as head teller and later as assistant cashier. She was of the Protestant faith. She and her husband enjoyed several activities such as golfing, fishing, boating and camping. Faye also enjoyed growing flowers and sewing. She was a long time member of VFW Post 9153 Ladies Auxiliary of Waltonville. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, with Pastor Tanner Green officiating. Huey Clint Hightower, 87, died at 9:30 a.m. May 14, 2005, at his residence.
The Warren County native was a carpenter for Goodrum and Lentz, a graduate of Richardsville High School and a Baptist. He was a son of the late William Luther Hightower and Mary Margaret Scroggins Hightower. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Edward and Dock S. Hightower; and three sisters, Mabel Milam, Eva Phelps and Lottie Hazel.
The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Home, with burial in Bowling Green Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Loberta Hanes Hightower; two daughters, Patty Whittaker and Dorothy Pendleton and her husband, James, all of Bowling Green; a son, Butch Hightower and his wife, Diane, of Scottsville; five grandchildren, Jimmy Pendleton, Johnna Crabtree, Tommy Whitaker, Katina McCoy and Tammy Perkins; 12 great-grandchildren, Travis, Trent, Trevor, Trinity, Tristan, Holly, Kody, Keyton, Connor, Nathan, Kolton and Gracie; two great-great grandchildren, Ethan and Max, and several nieces, nephews, great-neices and great-nephews.

GLASGOW - Ruby Beals Bradford, 95, of Glasgow died Feb. 15, 2006, at a Glasgow nursing home.
The Cave City native was a homemaker and a member of South Green Street Church of Christ. She was a daughter of the late William T. Proffitt and Amanda Thomas Proffitt and the wife of the late Roy Bradford.
Funeral is at 2 p.m. Friday at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home, with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday until time for services at the funeral home.
Survivors include a son, Alan Beals and his wife, Ernestine, of Glasgow; a daughter, Georgia Beth Albany of Glasgow; a sister, Annie Williams of Franklin, Ind.; five grandchildren, Alan Lynn Beals, Timothy Neal Beals and Jeffrey Carroll Beals, all of Glasgow, Dani Lott of Little Rock, Ark., and Billie Scroggins of Montgomery, Ala.; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. William Calvin Campbell, Sr. suddenly passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at the age of 72 years. He was born on January 4, 1936 to Hosey Campbell, Sr. and Josephine Germany in Union Springs, AL.
He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, William Jr. and Trudy Campbell, Bibbin and Michelle Campbell, Walter and Michelle Campbell; two daughters, Luven and Reginald West and Shawanda and David Scroggins; 24 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Hosey and Dorthy Campbell; one sister, Mattie Ellis of Union Spring, AL; a former son-in-law, Hugh Brown, Sr., Tommy Green, two very special nieces, Felicia Rincher, Sandra Campbell other relatives and friends. He was born Feb. 19, 1923, at Houston, a son of James and Agnes (Overley) Davlin.
He was a member of the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents a brother, James O. Davlin and two sisters, Catherine Dial and Dorothy Briggs.
Survivors include his wife, Virgie Davlin two sons, Terrence Richard Davlin II of Houston and James Pool of Jupiter, Texas three daughters, Mary K. Angel of Galena Park, Texas, Peggy Light of Irving, Texas and Denise Scroggins of Stuarts Draft a brother, Eli Davlin of Austin, Texas a sister, Pat Meyer of Peoria, Ill. 17 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
By his request his body was cremated and there will be no funeral services.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc., Shenandoah Chapter, 284 E. Water St., Harrisonburg VA 22801.

Rebecca Rawley of Mount Solon and Melissa Smith of Staunton were bridesmaids.
Michael Feldmeier of Broadway was best man.
Lyndon Joiner of Harrisonburg and Christopher Feldmeier of Broadway were groomsmen.
Julia, Dakota and Danielle Scroggins of Japan were flower girls.
Austin Lam of Mount Solon was ringbearer.
The bride graduated from Fort Defiance High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Eastern Mennonite University. She is an operating room coordinator at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
The groom graduated from Broadway High School. He works in environmental services at RMH.
After a honeymoon in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, the couple reside in Weyers Cave.

Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery. Chickasaw Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery. Mr. West died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at his home. He was born July 25, 1913, at Francis to Ely and Effie Bolin West. He attended school at Cedar Grove and Francis. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Mr. West was a Flight Maintenance Gunner, flying in 29 combat missions in a B-26 aircraft over enemy occupied territory of Germany and Belgium. He received the American Theater EAME Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Air Medal with 3 Bronze Clusters, and the Victory Medal. He moved to Moore in 1950 and returned to Francis in 1969. Mr. West was employed at Tinker Air Force Base in 1950 as a Hydraulic Mechanic and retired in 1971. He was a charter member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Moore and helped build the current building at Cedar Grove Free Will Baptist Church, where he was a longtime active member and served as a Deacon. He married Hazel Louise Scroggins [28731] Dec. 8, 1945. She died Sept. 17, 2004. AVON - Ruth Ann (Cobb) Barlowe was born in Marion to the late Henry and Edith Ann (Pettiford) Cobb. She lived most of her lifetime in Marion. She departed this life Wednesday at Avon Healthcare Center after an extended illness.
Jan. 15, 1945, she married Mayo Scroggins Sr. To this union, six children were born. She later married James E. Davis Sr. Then in 1969, she married Clarence Barlowe Jr. Ruth Ann attended Marion schools and worked at RCA for 19® years before retiring in 1968. In later years, she worked as resident manager for Prince Hall Housing Authority for approximately three years.
Ruth Ann confessed her faith in Christ at an early age. She was very active in church, community and political functions, offering her beautiful voice in song or preparing special meals. She served under the Rev. J.D. Williams, Greater Second Baptist Church, for many years and later became a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, serving under the Rev. C.L. Adams prior to relocating to Indianapolis.
Ruth Ann loved singing, bowling and cooking. She was always willing to help anyone in any way possible and became "Grandma" to many. She was a former member of the Daughters of I.B.P.O.E. of W. and once served as their state queen. She was a former member of the ChickA-Wa-Wa's and the Indy All-Star Clubs. She became ill in 1995 and was cared for by her daughter, Cyrece, for the following six years prior to entering a nursing facility.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Jerry Mac (Twanna) Scroggins, Orlando, Fla., and Mayo Scroggins Jr., Sacramento, Calif.; three daughters, Eleanor Louise Scroggins, Fayetteville, N.C., and Mary Maxine Brewer and Cyrece Ann (Scroggins) Fashola, both of Indianapolis; sister, Nettie Barnett; brother, Coy O. Cobb; five granddaughters, Tomia Scroggins, Tara Keys, Heather "Missy" Scroggins, Desiree' Hacker, Iwanda Dew and Terri Brewer; adopted granddaughter, Margaret Smith; five grandsons, Dion R. Cannon Sr., Scott Brewer, Josh Scroggins, Kyle Erickson and Michall (Dejuan) Jones; 31 great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Larry M. Scroggins; siblings, Calvin J. Cobb, Ammie (Marjorie) Stewart and Elizabeth Murrell; and a dear aunt, Beulah Malone.
Services are at 1 p.m. Monday in St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 1204 W. 14th St., Marion, with the Rev. C.L. Adams officiating. Burial is in Grant Memorial Park cemetery, Marion.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Pauline Bebout, 66, 30 Oak Manor Drive, formerly of Jonesboro, died Wednesday in her residence.
She was born in Marion, the daughter of the late John H. and Hulda M. (Overman) Mansbarger. She married David E. Bebout on March 6, 1959. He survives.
She was a waitress at Hampton Inn, Cocoa Beach, Fla., Chris's Cafe and Dot's Diner in Jonesboro and Vogel's Donut Shop in Marion. She formerly worked at Foster-Forbes in Marion. She attended Epworth School in Jonesboro.
Additional survivors include a son, David Bebout, Havelock, N.C.; daughters, Debbie Rae VanDine, Greenville, Texas, and Penny Lynn Owings, Gas City; brothers, (twin) Paul (Ruth) Mansbarger, Gas City, and Woodrow (Elvie) Cloud, Florida; sister, Catherine Broyles, Gas City; sisters-in-law, Minnie and Alma Mansbarger; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Cloud, Wilber Henry, John, Charles, William Mansbarger and Jacob Mansbarger; and a sister, Roda May Henderson.

Martha Lucille Blinn
July 19, 1918 - April 21, 2005
Martha Lucille Blinn, 86, Marion, entered eternity to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday at her home in the presence of loved ones.
She was born in Grant County to the late Dwight Wilcox and Ruth Leora (Small) Dragstrem. She married Samuel Blinn on Aug. 19, 1940. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Blinn was a retired homemaker, nurse's aide and 4-H leader. She was a charter member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church and a faithful Christian. She was a gracious and caring woman who shared her warmth, humor, kindness and generosity with everyone around her. Her home was a haven to all, from troubled Marion youth during the 1950s, who came to the farm to learn life skills, to her youngest great-grandchild, who trusted and adored her. She will be missed by all who knew her and by a family that loved her.
Survivors include sons, Edwin "Ed" (Sandy) Blinn and David (Lucille) Blinn, both of Marion; daughters, Janet (Charles) Sweeney, Cromwell, Sammie Ann (John) Dembosz, American Canyon, Calif., Kathleen and Donna Blinn, both of Marion, Nancy (James) Koudelka, Port Orchard, Wash., and Marilyn Blen, Yamhill, Ore.; a brother, James Dragstrem, Palm Coast, Fla.; sister, Mary Catherine Nierste, Marion; 28 grandchildren; and 45 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Dee and John Alvin; and a sister, Sarah Evelyn Dragstrem.

GAS CITY - Mrs. Minnie K. (Tullock) Cotter, 60, died suddenly Tuesday in her Gas City residence.
She was born in Greeneville, Tenn., the daughter of the late Roy Lee Tullock Sr. and Mary (Bowman) Tullock. Minnie and her late husband, Dennis E. Cotter, started the Bee-Line Taxi Cab in the late 1960s. She was previously employed at General Tire, Wabash, St. Regis Paper Co., Meshingomesia Country Club and Squirt's Bar, all of Marion.
She is survived by a daughter, Kim (Cotter) Cottrell, Van Buren; three sons, Michael E. "Mickey" (Danielle) Cotter, New Ulm, Minn., and John D. Cotter and Joseph F. "Joey" Cotter, both of Gas City; a brother, Roy Lee "Junior" (Sharon) Tullock, Greeneville, Tenn.; two sisters, Nancy C. (Frankie) Tripplett, Rogersville, Tenn., and Kaneta Benbow, Swayzee; companion/friend of 34 years, Mark Julian; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

JONESBORO - Joann K. Oden, 74, went to be with the Lord on Friday at 12:45 a.m. at Bradner Village Healthcare Center, Marion.
She was born in Buchanan, Mich., to the late Earl M. and Katherine Augusta (Walters) Sutton. She grew up in Amboy and graduated from Converse High School. She married Paul Oden on Oct. 5, 1952, in Amboy, and he survives. They later moved to Jonesboro where they resided for 36 years.
She was a homemaker and formerly worked as a telephone operator in Amboy. She loved people, especially her family and enjoyed talking to everyone. She was a member of the Wesleyan Church and attended Westview Wesleyan Church in Jonesboro.
Additional survivors include sons, Brian (Tina) Oden, and Mark (Sara Kim) Oden, both of Jonesboro; a daughter, Norma (Teddy) Dickey, Anderson; brother, Larry (Sandy) Sutton, Amboy; a sister, Marjorie (Howard) Bates, Gas City; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Garry Jones, 47, passed away at Marion General Hospital on Tuesday.
He enjoyed singing, cooking and spending time with his grandchildren. He attended Calvary Baptist Church and was formerly employed by R&R Truck and Radiator Service. He had been a member of the community for 39 years. He professed Christ at an early age under the leadership of the late Rev. John Speikes at New Light Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Vera Cole, Marion; mother, Ruby Jones, Marion; three daughters, Casandra L. Brown, Natecia Guy and Tomika Guy, all of Marion; a son, Michael Guy, Marion; six brothers, Ulysses (Elizabeth) Jones, Southbury, N.C., Leroy (Diana) Jones Jr., Marion, James E. Jones, Chicago, Jerry (Missy) Jones, Montevella, Ala., Lee (Elaine) Jones, and Cubie (Debra) Jones Sr., both of Marion; three sisters, Geraldine Miller and Erma (Roy Lee) Harvey, both of Marion, and Anita (Rudolph) Thomas, Ripley, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and hosts of nieces, nephews and many special friends, who will sadly miss him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leroy Jones Sr., and his brother, Hosay Jones.

Jack R. Bryant
Feb. 17, 1940 - April 21, 2005
CONVERSE - Jack R. Bryant, 65, died at 8 p.m. Thursday in his residence.
He was born in Burnside, Ky. to the late Oliver and Mildred (Wyatt) Bryant and had been a resident of the Converse area since 1964. He married Mary E. Steely on Aug. 26, 1961. She died on Nov. 15, 1999. He then married Atha E. Savage on May 18, 2003. She died on Feb. 13, 2005.
He retired from General Motors in 2002 after 36 years. He was a member and served as on officer in the union of Local 977. He was also a member of the Converse Masonic Lodge 601. He enjoyed being outside and working in the yard. He served with the Marines.
Survivors include daughter, Denise (Randy) Miller, Wabash; sons, Paul Bryant, Converse, Rob Savage, Kentucky, and David (Lori) Savage, Westchester, Ohio; grandchildren, Izaac Bryant, Bill, Brandon, Angel and Bryant Miller, and Zack and Alex Savage; brothers-in-law, Everett (Imogene) Steely, Sweetser, Albert (Cathy) Steely, Amboy, and Joe (Yvonne) Steely, Middlesboro, Ky.; sisters-in-aw, Lillie (Gary) Taylor, Pritchett, W. Va., and Anetha Gail Steely, Middlesboro, Ky.
He also was preceded in death by two brothers.

James Miles Hawkins

LaFONTAINE - James Miles Hawkins, 47, died Wednesday, at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Ill.
He was born to Richard and Eleanor (Jimmerson) Hawkins. He formerly was employed as a production worker at General Motors and served in the Army. He married Tamara (Emry) Hawkins on March 6, 1990.
James had a big heart and enjoyed doing anything anyone asked of him. He was a loving father, grandfather and uncle but will be fondly remembered as a man who loved all children and took care of many. He loved camping, fishing, boating and traveling and always talked about going back to Florida.
Along with his wife, Tami, and mother, Eleanor, he is survived by his two sons, James (Kelly) and John (Wendy) Hawkins, both of Marion; daughter, Stacie Hawkins, Marion; four grandchildren, Kali, Kristen, Justin and Jaren Miles; four brothers, Ronald (Kathy) and Donnie Borrow and David Hawkins, all of Marion, and Billy (Alice) Hawkins, Alexandria; and one sister, Debbie Emry, Marion.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard; brother, Fletcher; and sister, Paula.

TUCSON, Ariz. - William J. "Pete" Wampler, 80, a veteran of the Marine Corps and a former member of the Indiana House of Representatives, died Sunday in Tucson.
A native of Bloomington, and long-time resident of Marion, Pete and his wife of 58 years, Betty, had resided in Arizona since 1992. Mr. Wampler served in the Marine Corps during World War II from 1943 to 1946 as a corporal. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with four stars and the Presidential Unit Citation.
After the war, Pete enrolled at Indiana University where he met the former Betty Boxell. They were married Aug. 17, 1946. Pete continued his education at I.U., where he majored in business. Pete was a member of Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity, Sphinx Club and Skull and Crescent. A sousaphone player, he also became sergeant major of the Marching Hundred Band under the direction of Dr. Newell Long.
After his education at I.U., Pete and Betty settled in Marion, where Pete became a successful gasoline retailer and representative of U-Haul Rentals.
Active among Grant County Republicans, Pete was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1961 where he served the House Ways and Means committee.
Pete served as president of Hoosier Gasoline Retailers, president of the Indiana Petroleum Retailers Association, president of the Grant County Scottish Rite and president of the Indiana University Alumni Club of Grant County. Pete was a 50-year member of Samaritan Lodge 105 F&AM, the Fort Wayne Body of Scottish Rite, Mizpha Temple and Scottish Rite Club of Marion.
Pete was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion, a life member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, a 50-year member of Meshingomesia Country Club and a 30-year member of the Columbia Club of Indianapolis.
Pete was honored to be invited to, and attended, the presidential inaugurations of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.
Pete also enjoyed world travel, and trips took him to Russia, Japan, China, Egypt, Australia, Thailand and many other countries.
The only child of John and Eunice Wampler of Bloomington, Pete is survived by Betty and their two sons, Michael Wampler, Aspen, Colo., and Jon (Susan) Wampler, Newport Beach, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Margot, Peter and Lucas Wampler.
Pete will be remembered for his love of family and his enjoyment of music, in particular jazz. He played piano, organ and bass. He also had a tremendous sense of humor. He will be missed by family and friends.
Pete asked that his body be cremated. A memorial service will take place at Oro Valley United Church at 3 p.m. Tuesday. After the service, a celebration of his life will take place at Saddlebrooke Country Club.

Paul Eugene McCarthy
Paul Eugene McCarthy, Ph.D., 85, of Manhattan, died Friday, Feb. 9, at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.
The family provided some of the following information.
He was born on April 18, 1921 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Frank Eugene and Vera Glee (Newell) McCarthy.
Mr. McCarthy served in the United States Army Signal Corps during WWII as a second lieutenant. He was stationed in the Philippines and South Pacific.
Mr. McCarthy graduated from North High School in Des Moines and received his bachelor of arts and master of fine arts from the University of Iowa and his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Texas. He was an American Literature Professor/Melville scholar and had taught at Iowa State University, University of Texas, University of Idaho, University of North Dakota and the University of Alabama, prior to joining the faculty at K-State in 1967. He retired from K-State in 1991.
Mr. McCarthy held professional memberships in the Publication of Modern Language Association, American Association of University Professors, and The Melville Society. He was the author of two books: John Steinbeck and The Twisted Mind: Madness in Herman Melville's Fiction and a contributor of numerous articles to academic journals, including the Emerson Society Quarterly. He was currently working on an autobiography titles Let Bygones, Be Bygones.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Retired Officers Association, the NAACP, the ACLU, and Common Cause.
Mr. McCarthy enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, book collecting, photography, keeping fit, politics, archeology, anthropology, study of the mind, animals, and sports - especially K-State Wildcats and Iowa Hawkeyes - and had a wonderful sense of humor.
He married Phyllis E. Niemann on Aug. 29, 1948, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Nortonville. Mrs. McCarthy survives of the home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Michael Ide officiating. Burial will follow in Sunrise Cemetery with full military honors.

Mary Georgia "Dutch" Monnat, 87, of Manhattan, died Saturday, Feb. 10, in the Meadowlark Hills/Collins Landing, Manhattan.
The family provided some of the following information.
She was born Sept. 16, 1919, on the family farm, near Hanover, the daughter of John Henry Hellman and Mary Alice Lane Hellman. She grew up in the Hanover and Barnes areas of Kansas and attended the local schools. She had also attended a business school in St. Joseph, Mo.
She was united in marriage to Francis J. "Frank" Monnat on Nov. 8, 1944 at Manhattan. He preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 2000.
While following her husband's construction career, Mrs. Monnat lived in Croghan, N.Y. and other communities for many years. In 1979, they retired and moved back to Manhattan to live permanently.
She was a homemaker and had been a longtime member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Altar Society, Manhattan.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Monnat was preceded in death by two infant children; her parents; three brothers, John, Cyril and George Hellman; and two sisters, Theta Kathleen Hoppenstedt Robbins and Janet Elisabeth Mengers.
Survivors include a daughter, Colleen J. Scroggin, Manhattan; a son, Gerald F. "Jerry" Monnat, and his wife Donna Phillips, Alexandria, Va.; four grandchildren, Sean Monnat, Jackson, Mo., Colin Monnat, St. Louis, Mo., and Michael and Eryn Scroggin, both of Siloam Springs, Ark.; and two great grandsons, Kobi and Isak Scroggin.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan, with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Hanover.
A Vigil and Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Norman Lee Bosse, 75, of Wamego, formerly of Wheaton, died Saturday, Feb. 10, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.
The family provided some of the following information.
Norman was born Aug. 5, 1931 south of Wheaton, the son of Richard and Augusta Marten Bosse. He attended local schools and graduated in 1949 from Wheaton Rural High School. He then served in the U.S. Army.
Norman was a farmer/stockman on the family farm south of Wheaton. From 1984 until 2002, he also was a rural mail carrier. He moved to Wamego in 2001. He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton and then Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Wamego.
Norman married Margieanne Figge on July 28, 1957 in Wheaton. She survives of their home. He is also survived by two daughters, Nadalie Bosse and her husband, Larry Nettles of Leawood, and Belinda Hoover and her husband, Thomas of Lawrence; a son, Lanny Bosse and his wife Nancy of Wamego; two sisters, Delverna Wahl of Wamego, and Loleta Larsen and her husband, Neil, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two brothers, Marvin Bosse and his wife, Wilma, and Orlin Bosse and his wife, Loretta, both of Wheaton; a grandson, Mitchell Lee Bosse and three step-grandsons, Mike Hoover, Lance Hoover and his wife, Amy, and Sean Hoover and his wife, Jess; and a great-granddaughter, Makenzie Hoover. He was preceded in death by a sister Aldene Bosse.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Wamego. Rev. Jim Mayes will be officiating. Burial will follow at St. Luke Lutheran South Cemetery near Wheaton. Mr. Bosse will lie-in-state starting at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego, where the family will greet friends from 6 until 8 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. The family suggests memorials to Mt. Marian "Freddie" Cree, 84, of Clay Center, died Saturday, Feb. 10, at Presbyterian Manor in Clay Center.
She was born Nov. 4, 1922 at Clay Center.
She was raised in Clay Center and graduated from Clay County and graduated from Clay County Community High School in 1940. She married Morton Cree on Nov. 11, 1942. She worked as a secretary at Hutchinson Manufacturing in Clay Center. She also worked at the Lincoln School Library. She was active in her bridge club and the Little St. Andrews golf tournament at the Clay Center Country Club. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clay Center.
Mrs. Cree was preceded in death by her husband on June 22, 1973. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Susan; and a brother, Pete.
Survivors include a grandson, Kevin Carlson of Kansas City, Mo.; a granddaughter, Heather Miller of Cady, Texas; a son-in-law and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Chapel in Clay Center. Minister will be Pastor Jim Miller and Pastor Glenn Tombaugh. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center. There will be a visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Message: Rolando Fausto Carbonell CARBONELL, Rolando Fausto, 91, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 12, 2008. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eulalia Carbonell. Born in Havana, Cuba, November 19, 1916, to Bartolome Carbonell and Enriqueta Gastardi, our father leaves behind his loving daughter, Aida Rasco (William); son, Rolando Carbonell Jr.; daughter, Martha Delgado (Dennis); six grandchildren, Mykell Del Rosal (Danny), Kimberly Guy, Rick Carbonell (Denise), Deana Callison (Jim) Denise Scroggins (Bryan) and Michelle Delgado; five great- grandchildren; and a twin brother, Ruben Carbonell. Our father brought us from Cuba in 1960 to escape the communist regime of Fidel Castro, to give his family a better life, and for that we will be eternally grateful. In Cuba, our father was general manager and buyer for Flogar Department Stores and California Shoes. When coming here, he worked extremely hard and finally became manager of Red Cross Shoe Store in downtown Tampa. From there, he went on to being the owner of his first of five shoe stores, later called Mr. C' s Red Cross Shoe Stores, which he founded in 1974. Later, along with his son, he worked until 1998. His son continued the legacy. Our father loved music and singing. He and our mother would serenade to each other when they were dating and throughout our lives. There was always music and singing in our house. Our father, along with our mother, sang in the choir at St. Lawrence Catholic Church and Incarnation Catholic Church. How he loved music! BIG FORK - Gene Peck, 90, of Big Fork died Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, in his home. He was born April 13, 1917, in Ottawa County, Kan. He worked for Santa Fe Railroad, was a volunteer weather agent for the National Weather Service in Big Fork and the widower of Irene Peck and Illa Peck.

Melvin Earl Tingle, of Madras, died Tuesday of natural causes. He was 90.
A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel in Madras. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Madras.
Mr. Tingle was born May 18, 1917, in Miller, S.D., the son of Willis and Mae (Scroggins) Tingle. He married Aletha Tingle on Feb. 4, 1939, in Nampa, Idaho.
Mr. Tingle was a farmer. He was affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Central Oregon Shrine Club and the Masonic Lodge.
He enjoyed playing cards, golf, riding four-wheelers and spending time with friends and family. He moved to Central Oregon in 1946.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Dennis, of Madras; a brother, Omar, of Springville, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son and a brother.
Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roy Ernest Spriggs 98 of rural Pittsburg passed away at 11:45 am, Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at Mt Carmel Regional Medical Center of Pittsburg, Kansas, following a short illness.
He was born February 20, 1909 in rural West Mineral, Kansas, one of 12 children born to Joel Etra Spriggs and Bertha Estelle Hamblin-Spriggs.
He attended Myram Country School. As a boy he loved to fish and hunt. During the winter he would hunt rabbits and muskrats, trapping the muskrats and shooting the rabbits through the head so as not to make holes in the pelts. His older brothers always wanted Roy to go hunting with them because he could climb like a monkey and run like a deer. Roy would climb the trees to get raccoons and crawl into culverts to get skunks. Growing up he did a lot of cultivating, always cultivating bare footed. He would stand on the back of the mule drawn cultivator and use his toes to pull weeds that the cultivator missed. He enjoyed watching ducks swim on the pond. When a baby duck went under the water and did not resurface or a grown duck started swimming in circles and leaning to one side, he knew the culprit was a turtle. Roy would swim out to the duck, go under water and rescue the duck from the mouth of the turtle. As a teenager he got a job dragging the roads. He would drag 5 to 6 mile!
s of road with horses, dragging two 2" x 12" planks. Each plank was 12 to 14 feet long. It would take Roy one full day to drag all 5 to 6 miles of road. This was done 2 to 3 times a month, depending on the weather. His wages was around $1 (one dollar) a day. Roy seldom drank milk with his meals. He drank most of his milk when he milked the cows, by hand, morning and night. About a quart of milk would not fit into the buckets and he would drink that amount from the bucket so he could finish milking the cows. As a child he got oranges and a stick of candy for Christmas. One year he got a pair of shoes but his favorite childhood Christmas was the year he got a little pocket knife along with the oranges and candy. As a child his illnesses were treated with syrup of onion juice, sugar was stirred into onion juice until the sugar melted. Sips of this was used to treat coughing, sore throats, congestion plus other illnesses they didn't have treatment for. Tobacco smoke puffed into!
the ear gave immediate relief to an earache. Flannel cloth saturated
with turpentine was applied to the chest for croup. If the croup continued, swallowing a lump of sugar with a couple drops of turpentine was a sure cure. Ring worm was treated by rubbing the husk of a walnut on the ring worm. The seven year itch, now known as scabies, was treated by bathing in the water used to douse plow shears in when sharpening and tempering the steel of the plow shears.
He was united in marriage to Mary Jeannette Wright, June 1, 1933, at the Methodist Parsonage in Cherokee, Kansas; she survives at home.
He is a member of Beulah Community Church.
Around 1937 P&M (Pittsburg and Midway) Mining Company wanted to mine for coal and bought much of the farm land around West Mineral. Roy moved his family from rural West Mineral to rural Pittsburg where he was a life long farmer, enjoying the simplicity of rural life always ready to help anyone or anything; helping a neighbor farmer get their hay baled before a rain, rescuing a fallen baby bird back into its nest, carrying a new born calf from the pasture into the warmth of the barn during a cold winter storm. His love for all creatures great and small was instilled in his daughters at a very young age. He farmed during the day and worked in the coal mines at night. He alway tried to get one strip of ground plowed before the sun went down, Tom and Jerry, his team of mules did not have lights, so he could continue plowing by the light of the moon seeing the difference in color of the freshly turned soil he knew where to plow. e and his brother Ray Spriggs built a cabin in Golden, Missouri prior to the establishment of Table Rock Lake. After the filling of Table Rock Lake he and his family enjoyed unmeasurable hours of fishing and boating on Table Rock Lake at Spriggs' Twin Coves.
Additional survivors include 2 daughters: Vicki Rae Spriggs-Bateman of Pittsburg, Kansas, Sharon Kay Spriggs-Perry and her husband Roy of Golden, Missouri; brother Ray Spriggs and his wife Hazel of of Pittsburg, Kansas; two grand-daughters Cindy Ulery-Bole and her husband Brad of Columbus, Kansas, Stephanie Bateman of Olathe, Kansas, four grandsons Michael Ulery and Craig Bateman of Pittsburg, Kansas, Brian Perry and his wife Christine of Helena, Montana, Jeff Perry and his wife Stephanie of Forth Worth, Texas, three great grandsons Nicholas and Alex Bole and Devin Ulery.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one daughter, six brothers and 4 sisters; Infant son: Billy Dean Spriggs in1938, Daughter: Judith Ann Spriggs-Ulery in 2007,
Sisters: Lelah Sullinger, Lula Ziegler, Lola Scroggins, Golda Crain, Brothers: William Spriggs , Oscar Spriggs, Three month old Baby Boy Spriggs, Luther Spriggs, Lee Spriggs, and Ross Spriggs
Services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday (Feb. 4) at the Brenner Mortuary with Rev. Murray Balk officiating. Burial will follow in the Girard Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Brenner Mortuary, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Sunday.
In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to Beulah Community Church and/or Mt Carmel Regional Medical Center . Memorials may be left at or mailed to Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, Kansas.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg.

PITTSBURG - Services for Troy Campbell, 83, of Scroggins, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 7, 2008, at Erman Smith Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Glossup and the Rev. Joe Bass officiating. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery of Franklin County. Mr. Campbell died February 4, 2008, in Winnsboro.
Born September 1, 1924, in Franklin County, he was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II, retired from Lone Star Steel, a Mason, Shriner and member of New Hope Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Loraine Campbell; daughters, Cathy Bullard, Toni Romans, Pam Borne and Glenda Hedger; brother, John M. "Bud" Campbell; and sister, Maureen Munn. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Message: Margaret A. Urich MARGARET A. URICH Born: Nov. 26, 1919; in Batavia Died: Feb. 7, 2008; in St. Charles She enjoyed square dancing with her husband BATAVIA - Margaret A. Urich, 88, of Batavia, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at Rosewood Care Center in St. Charles. She was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Batavia, to Carl and Mae (Hanosh) Nelson. She was united in marriage to Arnold John George Urich. She was employed by Furnas Electric for several years before retirement. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was active in the church choir and a member of Ladies Aid. She enjoyed square dancing with her husband. She also had a green thumb with a passion for yard work and gardening. She leaves behind many fond memories for her family and friends, who will miss her dearly. She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie (Patrick) Scroggins of Batavia and Darlene Troutt of Gladstone, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; Scott, Jay and Jon Urich, Robert, Sean, Nathan and Matthew Troutt, and Jennifer Giese, Thomas Conville, Kevin, Jason and Sarah Scroggins; 22 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Lorraine Peddy of Batavia, Madelyn Bast of Abilene, Texas, and Marion Blakesley of Batavia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Ronald; a daughter, Linda Conville; a sister, Evelyn Sytar; and three brothers, Alfred, Carl and Allen Nelson. The visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral Monday, Feb. 11, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 950 Hart Road, Batavia, with the Rev. Ronald Weidler officiating.
