Mary Louise (Raven) Scruggins, 88, widow of Mr. Taft "Chief" Scruggins, died at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2008 in the Cherokee County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, in the Memory Chapel of The Arnold Moore Funeral Residence. Pastor G. Avery Scruggins, her grandson, and the Rev. Dale Nielsen will be the officiants. Committal prayers and interment will be directed in the Silver Lake Cemetery by The Arnold Moore Funeral Service.
Mrs. Scruggins will lie in state in the Drawing Rooms of The Arnold Moore Funeral Residence where family and friends may call for their visitation until the service hour.
An Oklahoma native, Mary Louise Raven was born March 12, 1919 at Fish Creek, near Bartlesville, in Washington County. She was the daughter of John L. Raven and Lucinda (White) Raven. She was reared and completed her education in the Dewey Public Schools. She was united in marriage to Taft "Chief" Scruggins on December 20, 1935 at Pawhuska, Oklahoma and they established their first home in Bartlesville. Mary was a homemaker and Mr. Scruggins was an employee of the Phillips Petroleum Company and later became active in industrial iron construction which took them to various parts of the United States. They moved to the Grove, Oklahoma community in 1972. Mr. Scruggins preceded her in death on May 18, 1991 in Grove and she remained a resident of Grove living in retirement. She had recently moved to Tahlequah to be near family.
Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Bette Scruggins of Tahlequah; three grandchildren, Jonna S. Burkett and husband, Justin; Bradley C. Scruggins, G. Avery Scruggins and wife, Kelly; six great grandchildren, Tory Raven Walton, Kazmira Kalain Lowry and Britney Mariah Scruggins; Natashsia Marie Finn, Jennifer Robin Chanate and Cage Avery Scruggins; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her husband and father and mother, five sisters, Edna Pratt, Sue Schmidt, Cecile Schmidt, Gatsey Bowker, and Irene Gable; and two brothers, Pete Edwin Raven and James "Jimmy" Leroy Raven, preceded her in death.
