Title: Historical treasure purchased for just $10

Carroll Scrogin-Brincefield noticed a listing in a flyer for one of Bill Griffin's estate auctions on some German prisoner of war photographs and letters being offered for sale.That was in the spring of 2006 at a time when she was thinking about working on a book about the German internment camps in Texas.

A resident of Hallettsville who is teaching government, economics and world history at Miller High School in Corpus Christi, she had no idea what a historical find it would be when she purchased the items on a winning bid of $10, even though it would turn out that none of the items pertained to German POWs.

What she found covered in cellophane in half of a cardboard box - the kind that canned goods come in - were mug shots taken by the Houston Police Department along with Federal Bureau of Investigation reports from agents in the Gulf Coast area on men who had been arrested and suspected of un-American activities during a time of labor unrest among sailors and longshoreman in the 1930s.

After subsequent contacts with the police department and using the Freedom of Information Act to obtain information from the FBI, Brincefield managed to identify 11 men in the photographs from 1935 to 1938. Among the items there was also one group picture and two typed onionskin papers, one being an FBI report on NAZI sympathizers in 1939 and 1940.

Brincefield's research resulted in her writing a paper for the recent fall meeting of the East Texas Historical Association on the rounding up of suspects accused of un-American Activities on the Texas Gulf Coast in the 1930s. Written on the back of the photographs were such notations as "Commie," "Red" and "Red big shot," indicating some of the suspicions that the police had.

"There was not one picture of a German," she says. "All were American citizens, mostly in Texas."

She first contacted the Houston PD and got the arrest records, then went to the FBI for additional information where she had to provide proof of each one's death, information that she found in Social Security death records. The men had scattered about the country from Florida to New York, Texas and California.

Although she has been unable to find any record of convictions, she believes two of the men were tried for murder and that the rest were just released. All were involved in forming unions, in labor strikes, or other labor activities along the Texas Gulf Coast. That being during the bleak period of the Great Depression, she says many workers were feeling less secure in their jobs and some saw the Communist Party in the U.S. as a way to address their concerns.

"There was a great upsurge in communist participation," she further notes, "and influence in labor unions, especially in the maritime industry. Angry workers turned to radicals, men who had been active in the Industrial Workers of the World and in many cases who were now members of the Community Party, or they fell under the sway of gangsters who reflected the other side of the militant traditions on the docks."

What resulted, she explains, was a waterfront that became "more of a war zone than a place of work."

Of the 11 men in the mug shots, she says their records indicate not all were communists, nor did all of them engage in gangster activity.

Two of the men had connections to this part of the state.

A longshoreman, Sylvester P. Brown was born in 1891 at Victoria. He was arrested for allegedly shooting three men and wounding three others on Ship Channel Row. He is not listed as having been a member of the Communist Party.

Santos Garcia, a dispatcher from Baytown who was born in El Campo in 1910, was arrested for an attempted robbery of Miller's Café. The reports indicate he may have been part of a "beef squad" sent in to break the strikers' picket lines.

One of the men, Homer Brooks, a native of Pennsylvania who gave his occupation as an electrician from Houston, was known as organizer for the Communist Party. He was so devoted that Brincefield says he was known to talk so long and so hard to so many people that his jaw muscles were overdeveloped. He also ran twice for governor of Texas on the communist ticket.

Brincefield received more than 120 pages from the FBI on Brooks.

"In reading the reports and the comments," she says, "I have come to the conclusion that Homer Brooks was probably one of the few true communists in this group of 11 men."

It was a complex time in maritime labor relations in Texas and elsewhere in the United States, and she says regardless of their guilt or innocence, or whether they were communists or communist sympathizers, the men in the pictures had endured hardships from the working conditions onboard ships and the grueling workload on the docks.

What they could never have guessed is that their mug shots would turn up years later in an auction barn in South Texas, that for 10 bucks they would be a historical treasure.

HUDSON, Wis. -- Julia A. (Tyler) Lowe, 56, lost her long battle against breast cancer on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, at her home in the company of her family. Julia's life was interrupted prematurely, but she leaves all those who knew her in awe of her strength.A native of Baltimore, Julie was born in August 1951 to her parents, the late Julian W. Tyler and his wife, the late Lucretia A. Tyler. A 1969 graduate of Parkville High School, Julie spent several years as a Baltimore Colts Cheerleader. She later earned a degree in psychology from Towson State University, which she employed in her service as a police officer and corrections officer in Maryland and upon her move to Hudson at the Washington County Jail with her husband, Dennis.

Throughout her life, Julie was an example of perseverance and fierce independence for her family and friends. Her creative talents shone in her cooking, gardening, sewing and interior design, and her love for animals was clear in the extension of her home throughout the years to many beloved pets.

Julie is survived by her husband, Dennis Lowe, in Wisconsin; daughters, Rebecca James and her partner, Beth Harron, in Pennsylvania, Sarah (Pitcock) Brunner and her husband, Adam, in Minnesota and Katherine Pitcock in Minnesota; son, Daniel Lowe, in Wisconsin; a stepdaughter, Tracy Scrogin and her husband, Eugene, in Maryland; a grandson, Benjamin Brunner; two cherished feline companions; several supportive extended family members; and many friends, including the Affirming Life Cancer Support Group.

Julie grieved the loss of her son, Benjamin Lowe; stepson, Douglas Lowe; father, Julian Tyler; mother, Lucretia Tyler; many animal companions; and several friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Monday at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home, 520 S. 11th St. in Hudson. Pastor Mark Neumann of Trinity Lutheran will preside. A time of reflection for family and friends remembering the life of Julia will immediately follow the service and continue until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. DUMAS - Darvella Scroggins, 78, formerly of Fritch, died Wednesday, June 27, 2007.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Brad Foster, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Dumas Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Scroggins was born July 10, 1928, in Eastland County to Grover and Norma Pilgrim. On July 22, 1944, she married Clyde Scroggins.

Survivors include two sons, Roger Scroggins of Dumas and Marlon Scroggins of Bull Shoals, Ark.; two daughters, Velita Bailie of San Angelo and Darlene Bailey of Amarillo; a sister, Clarlene Williams of Anchorage, Alaska; 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Raymond L. Murray

Age 86. Died peacefully, Sunday July 8, 2007 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. Born December 13, 1920 in New Lenox, IL, he was a lifetime area resident. A U.S. Army veteran who served in the South Pacific during WWII. Past Commander of VFW Cantigny Post #367. Ray retired January 1, 1981 from Reynolds Metals Co., after 34 years of dedicated service. He was General Foreman of the Cold Rolling Dept. He liked to Bowl and was an avid Golfer who achieved a hole in one several years ago.

Surviving are one son, David (Lenora) Murray of Hazen, AR.; two daughters, Barbara (Richard) Conklen of Omro, WI., and Pamela Murray of Downers Grove, IL.; grandchildren, Deanna (Steven) Elmendorf, Larry (Amy) Murray, Susan (Kevin) Kaehlert and Debbie (David) Bergmann; great grandchildren, Christopher and Kimberly Elmendorf, Colin and Lindsay Murray, Jordan and Trenton Kaehlert, and Madison Bergmann. Also survived by a brother, William K. Murray; two sisters, Marge Waznis and Dolores Moore; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his faithful canine companion, Cody.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruby (nee Hill) Murray; one grandson John Conklen; his parents, Joseph and Margaret (nee Scroggins) Murray; and his sister, Dorothy Govoni.

Funeral services for Raymond L. Murray will be Thursday, July 12, 2007 at St. John Lutheran Church, 2650 Plainfield Rd. (at Hennepin Dr.), where he will lie in state from 9:30 a.m. until the services begin at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. He was born in St. pascal, Quebec, Canada on December 23, 1915. The son of Edmond and Helena (Pelletier) Morneau. As a young child, he moved to Lawrence, MA. He lived there a few years before moving to Greenville where he lived most of his life. He was employed 42 years at Warwick Mill in New Ipswich where he worked as a Technical Supervisor, retiring in 1982. Mr. Morneau was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Greenville, as well as a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus council 8016. Having love of the outdoors, he enjoyed gardening and fishing. He also loved woodworking. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Estelle (Godin) Morneau of Greenville. Three Sons, Lionel Y. Morneau of Milford, Dennis L. Morneau of Candia, and Keith R. Morneau of Greenville. A daughter, Bernadette M Cooke of Keene. Six grandchildren, and Three great grandchildren. A brother, Armand P. Morneau of Greenville, and a sister, Carmen Brown of Mason. Nieces and nephews. He was pre deceased by a great grandson, Tyler N. Scroggins. There are no calling hours. She was born in Dawson March 27, 1908, the daughter of Joseph and Beatrice Walls Rodgerson. She married Russell Thornton in 1979. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Reynolds.

A resident of Springfield for 20 years, Mrs. Thornton was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband, Russell; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Jacqueline) McFaul of Hollywood, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Lila Hohimer and Mrs.

Maxine Burgar, both of Springfield; one son, Ed Scroggins of Reseda, Calif.; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; 18 stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Vivian Rodgerson Evans of Springfield; one brother, Joe Rodgerson of Springfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Julie was working for the Big 10 Mart in Davenport. She enjoyed music, reading People magazine, watching Dr. Phil and being with her family. She was a member of Gilda's Club.

Ann (Scroggins) Haddon, 44, of Groton, beloved wife of Thomas Haddon, passed away on Friday, Nov. 16, 2007 surrounded by her family.

She was born in Groton on Sept. 26, 1963, and was the daughter of the late James and Geraldine (O'Brien) Scroggins.

Being a native Noanker, she enjoyed an idyllic childhood, clamming at the Noank Shipyard with her dad and grandfather Scroggins; swimming at the Town Dock; playing at the park; and entertaining her friends in the "Noank Sunshine Club," which was a shed in her backyard. Her love of gardening was evident in the spectacular array of flowers at her home.

Annie had a very special place in her heart for her beloved Pug Molly O'Brien, her devoted companion of 17 years who predeceased her in February 2007. The courage, strength and perseverance that Annie showed throughout her illness will be a testament of her determination to fight to continue to be a mother to her young children, and a wife to her husband.

Ann was a communicant of the St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church in Groton.

Besides her husband, she leaves her two children, Andrew and Heather Haddon of Groton; her husband's children, Jonathan Haddon of New London and David Haddon of Mystic; two brothers, Michael Scroggins and his wife, ReiAnne, of Palm Coast, Fla. and James Scroggins and his wife, Brenda, of Mystic; three sisters, Lindsay Ashton and her husband, Jay, of Noank, Patricia Stenz and Elizabeth Rowley, both of Groton; her goddaughter, Kelani Scroggins of Palm Coast, Fla.; and her aunts, Leola O'Brien of Old Mystic and Virginia O. Brown of Jacksonville, Fla.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic. A mass will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Rd. Everyone is asked to go directly to church on Wednesday morning.

Chemical Corp., where he was a Production Manager. Keith moved to Fort Myers in 1997, where he was a member of the Gulf Lions Club and volunteered for Hospice and Homeless Shelters. He was a marathon runner, having run in the Chicago Marathon and numerous other Florida runs and coached Little League Baseball in Wilmington, IL. Keith loved the art of conversation. Survivors include three sons: Steve (Brenda) Senior of Michigan, Kevin (Lori) Senior of Wilmington, IL and Martin Curtis (Carolyn) Senior of Channahon, IL. Two daughters: Denise (Glenn) Farmer of Wilmington, IL and Melanie Touvell of Braidwood, IL. Eleven grandchildren: Brandon, Jennifer, David, Mathew, Nichole, Jake, Brett, Christina, Caitlin, Tyler, Jennifer and Ashley. Charles A. Scroggins was born Jan. 2, 1929, in Phelps, Mo.

Our Dad was held in high regard by all. He was always a kind, generous, unselfish and hard-working person. Our Dad had been so faithful to his family and friends through these years. He remained a devoted husband and caring father. Dad truly had the heart of a servant.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Marie Claybough and Fern Bebout; and his brother, Sonny Marion Scroggins.

Survivors: Wife of 57 years, Jimmie Scroggins; sons, Dennis Scroggins and wife, Glenda, Kent Scroggins and wife, Darla and Don Scroggins; daughter, Gail Rutledge; grandchildren, Joshua, Luke, Sandy, Aaron, Caleb, Nathan, Kimberly, Quinton, Jennifer and Thaddaeus; seven great-grandchildren; and sisters, Virgie Lela Lewis and Georgia F. Burneda Frances (Scroggins) Gallion, 69, went home to be with the Lord at her home surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, November 10, 2007. A native of Evansville, she also lived in Wadesville and Crossville for many years before returning to Evansville in 2003, a year after her husband, "Delmo," went home to be with the Lord.

Burneda worked many years at Kent Plastics, which later became Ball Plastics and Whirlpool of Evansville. In later years became a homemaker. She loved her children and grandchildren. In her early years she enjoyed horseback riding and sunbathing, and in later years enjoyed singing karaoke and sunbathing. All who met her were touched by her beautiful smile and sweet disposition.

Preceding her in death is her husband of 45 years, Walter "Delmo" Gallion. Succeeding her in death are her children, James Gallion of Evansville, Steven Gallion and wife, Letty, and grandchildren, Cody and Bianca of San Antonio, Texas, and Nikki (US Navy) of Pensacola, Fla.; Richard Gallion and wife, Erica, and grandchildren, Harley and Harrison of Evansville; Kenneth Gallion and wife, Sharon, and grandchildren, Kendall Honeycutt and husband, Brad, of Clayton, N.C., Aaron, Emilee and Abigail of Fayetteville, N.C.; Melinda Bidabe and husband, Steve, of Chandler, Ind., and grandchildren, Krystal of Norris City, Ill., Ashley of Chandler, Ind., and Steve Jr., (US Navy) of San Diego, Calif.; and great-grandchildren, Preston and Dylan. Also, brothers, James Scroggins [9281] of Kissimmee, Fla., Charles Orange [45931] and Paul Scroggins [45932] of Evansville; and sister, Violet Sweeney [45933] of Las Vegas, Nev.

Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. today at Sunset Cemetery in Nacogdoches. Mrs. Scroggins passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, in a Longview hospital. Dorothy Scroggins was born Sept. 28, 1920, daughter of the late Clarence and Edna Gunn. Mrs. Scroggins was a homemaker and foster mother to many children. Dorothy enjoyed playing games of all kinds; she loved working in her yard and making crafts, which included quilting and crocheting. Mrs. Scroggins was a member of Forest Home Baptist Church. DA awaits findings by police

A mother and her boyfriend have been arrested on a murder complaint after Monday's death of a 23-month-old Oklahoma City girl.

The toddler and a 9-month-old boy taken to the hospital by the woman appeared to have been sexually abused, Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater was told by police . The girl appeared to have been beaten to death, Prater was told.

Olivia Scroggins died at St. Anthony Hospital about noon Monday after her mother, Wendy Scroggins, 22, and the mother's boyfriend, Kerry Joe Smith, 21, brought Olivia in for medical treatment, police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said in a news release.

Both Scroggins and Smith later were arrested on first-degree murder and child abuse complaints. They now are in the Oklahoma County jail and are being held without bail.

Prater said he is waiting for police to complete their investigation so he can make a decision on filing criminal charges.

The prosecutor said he didn't know yet whether the mother or children had prior involvement with the state Department of Human Services.

Early findings
Olivia had "visible trauma to her body" when she was brought to the hospital, which raised suspicions as to how the child died, Knight said.

"While speaking to family members of the victim, the officer noticed a 9-month-old child in their care who also showed signs of trauma and abuse," Knight said.

Police cannot release the identity of the 9-month-old or whether the child belongs to Scroggins or Smith, but Knight said the child was treated at the hospital for his injuries and is expected to survive. The baby was placed in protective custody.

Police interviewed both Scroggins and Smith for several hours Monday night.

Scroggins and Smith live together in an apartment, 3317½ N McKinley, Knight said. Police were called to the residence on a domestic abuse call on Aug. 14, but no report was ever filed and details of what happened were not available.

A neighbor, Jamesina Golden, said Tuesday she feared the children were in danger, but would not elaborate.

"I'm upset because of what I know. ... I'm upset because a child is dead."

Criminal record
Records show Smith has a criminal history.

In 2002, a former girlfriend obtained a protective order against Smith, accusing him of removing an air conditioner, punching out a window and breaking through a locked door to gain entrance to her home and attack her.

"I defended myself with scratching and biting," the woman said.

Two years later, Smith pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of violating the protective order by harassing the woman and breaking out a bedroom window in her home. He received a one-year suspended sentence.

Smith also:

•Pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution in 2005 and was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail.

•Pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary, making a false declaration of ownership to a pawnbroker and bail jumping in 2006 and received deferred sentences.

•Smith also had a juvenile record that included charges of second-degree burglary, public intoxication and joyriding, according to court records.
