abc7news.com: Video Game Helps Train Real-Life Soldiers
abc7news, San Francisco, CA, 1 Sep 2005
abc7news, San Francisco, CA, 1 Sep 2005
Sept. 1 - A Bay Area software company is now helping American soldiers stay safe in Iraq. Thousands of troops are being trained with technology that was created as video game entertainment, but may now save lives.
A suicide bomber plows into an American convoy in a crowded Baghdad square. Seven people dead. Another bomber, this one dressed as a police officer, kills 20 and injures 100 more.
Fifteen die in a bombed-out building hit with a truck full of explosives hidden under a pile of watermelons.
They are the kind of incidents happening almost daily in Iraq. Ordinary moments in ordinary places that suddenly turn deadly.
Now, thanks to an Alameda company called total immersion software, the U.S. Army has a new tool to train soldiers to be ready for the unexpected.
The video game is called "Ambush." In this scenario, insurgents in a stolen Iraqi police car are manning a checkpoint that turns into an ambush.
The training program was developed specifically for the military, using commercial video game technology and incorporating real life incidents experienced by soldiers in Iraq.
Stephen Blankenship, total immersion software: "This is as close as you can get to real life without risking injury, other than maybe repetitive stress syndrome or something."
Army troops at Fort Lewis in Washington state are among the first to train with the new software.
Twenty-two members of two squads are training together to run convoys. Some are drivers, some are gunners, others, just passengers. They all play at the same time and what each person does affects the others.
After each exercise, there's a debriefing.
Sergeant Johnny Scroggins is from Weaverville, California. He's already been to Iraq and is training with soldiers who'll be going over soon.
Sgt. Johnny Scroggins, U.S. Army: "It's very realistic. All these things are happening at once and that right there is where you get your emotional, your adrenaline gets going."
The game was developed in just six months by a team of about 30 people.
The software is constantly updated with new scenarios based on what's happening in Iraq.
Lt. Col. Thomas Willmuth, U.S. Army: "We got to stay adaptive with the enemy because the enemy, as soon as something stops working, they will change their tactics."
The Army has been so pleased with the ambush video training, they've now sent it to Iraq to train soldiers who are already there.

HELPERS MAKE ROOF WORK RAPID
Bare boards were all Jonathan and Melanie Scroggins had left of a roof on their Haverhill home.
One big rain and everything inside would be lost.
One day later and 27 people on their roof repairing it.
Divine intervention?
Could be.
Their group of helpers were fellow Jehovah Witnesses. The local group has repaired as many as 100 roofs in the last year and are just back from Mississippi, where they did 10.
The foreman, Moe Senechal, said if it has the materials, his crew, mostly young people, can repair three or four homes in a day. They take photos for building inspectors.
When it came to the Scroggins, there was no time to wait.
"They had no roof, and we know the codes," Senechal said.

Lee County sheriff's deputies arrested a 14-year-old Lehigh Acres boy and his 10-year-old brother Tuesday in connection with a string of robberies this month that netted them tens of thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry.
According to records, Peter Scroggins 14, and John Alexander Scroggins, 10, allegedly stole more than $15,000 in cash and jewelry from five Lehigh Acres homes. All five burglaries happened less than three-quarters of a mile from their home at 1033 Abrams Blvd.
The spree started the night of Oct. 1, when the brothers entered 1032 Albert Ave. through open sliding doors and allegedly stole about $600 in cash from owner Juan Sanchez and his brother Carlos, records show.
The next incident was two weeks later, on Oct. 15, when the boys allegedly stole $450 in cash from 825 Agnes Ave., owned by Kimberly Cleaver, according to the sheriff's report. Investigators believe the Scroggins lifted a window and picked a lock to get inside.
On Oct. 18, deputies said the pair got inside 1025 Albert Ave. through an unlocked back door and allegedly nabbed $3,500 in jewelry and $50 in cash from owner Erica Quiroa.
The next day, the brothers hit the same block and found their biggest score, according to arrest records. The pair allegedly took $4600 in watches and $800 in cash from 1017 Albert Ave., owned by Edduino Sierra, deputies said. They believe the brothers entered through a side door in the garage, which was unlocked.
That same night, they allegedly robbed a house on their own block, deputies said.
They entered 1016 Abrams Ave., owned by Corrinda Hallman, and allegedly stole $4,630 in jewelry along with $560 in cash.

Grant Jackson, Jr. was born September 28th, 1926, to Grant and Thelma Scroggins Jackson, Sr. Grant grew up in the Warrior Community, where he attended public school. Grant loved a good game of baseball. Grant was a good person and one day realized that something was missing in his life, 'The Lord'. In 1948 he was united in marriage to Blisteen Goudeau and to this union eight children were born. Grant proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Army serving from February 1946 until his honorable discharge in 1947. Grant was a construction worker for many years until a job injury ended that career, however farming was his passion. He farmed until ill health prevented him from doing so. Grant was a Mason, member of the NAACP and American Legion Post #267.
Grant departed this life on May 7th, 2005 while residing at the VA Regional Center in Claremore. The family preceding him in death were his parents, sisters and brothers, Delton, Mary, Walter and Queen and one son, Ronnie Joe. Grant's life spanned seventy-eight years, and eight months.
