Biography
Funeral for SFC (Retired) Andrew J. Scroggins, 86, Cache will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at the Cache Schools Auditorium with Scott Reed officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be at Cache Cemetery under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.

Andrew was born on September 27, 1927 in Spearville, Kansas to Jack [13823] and Clara [13824] Scroggins. His father left the family for California during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. Those early years, he and his brother Ed [13825] worked in Kansas doing odd jobs including milking cows, delivering ice, setting up circus tents, picking cotton, and doing pranks much like Huck Finn might have done, all the while going to dime movie shows on the weekends. By the time he was seventeen, or maybe before, he joined the Navy and was on one of Adm. Richard Byrd’s expeditions to Little America in the Antarctic. He then entered the Army in post-war Germany, where he met his first true love, Mathilde Karolina Seiter [52798]. She, as a war bride, and her son, Kurt Robert [52790] , immigrated to America in 1953. The next year, their son Michael [52800, fb] was born at Ft. Sill. SFC Scroggins then served tours of duty in Korea; Sheboygan, WI; and Mainz, Germany; returning to Lawton in the early 1960’s. He retired after more than 20 years of military service. Over the next two decades, he worked in the Postal Service as a letter carrier, many years of which were in the Woodland Hills addition. On his routes, he made many friends, some of whom can remember his lugging the mailbag in the heat of summer and the ice and snow of winter. He and Hilde moved to the east side of Cache along Crater Creek in mid-1970. After Hilde died suddenly a few years later, Andy met his second love Mayme Marlow [43776] and they married on Easter Sunday 1980. They were together more than 25 years, the latter part of which Andy served as a constant caregiver during Mayme’s Alzheimer’s illness.
Andy will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather. He was a firm believer in his faith, attending and active in church, first at Cameron Baptist in Lawton and later at the First Baptist Church in Cache. In his more than 30 years in the Cache community, he proved a loyal and generous friend to many. He was also determined to remain independent during his 8 month illness with bone marrow lymphoma, deferring to leave home until the final week of his life forced him to hospital. He will be missed.
Survivors include his sons: Kurt Robert Scroggins [52799], MD of Lawton and Montepulciano, Italy; and Michael [52800, fb] and wife Della Della [52801, fb] Scroggins of Lawton; grandchildren: Jared [52803, fb] and Kacie [52802, fb] of Lawton; step-sons: Eddie and Oleta Marlow, Martin and Reesie Marlow, and Stephen and Marietta Marlow, all from Cache; siblings: Kay Anson, Moore, OK; Sue and Harold McPherson, Cleburne, TX; Harold and Sharon Anson, Ada, OK; and Marie Dew, Ada, OK. He is also remembered by many nephew, nieces, and cousins including a special sister-in-law, his dear brother Ed’s wife Elaine [] in Gillette, WY, and a nephew Gary Dean currently in Nigeria and a step-grandson Mitch and Rachel of Cache. Surviving members from Hilde’s family include a nephew Wolfgang Seiter in Karlsruhe, Germany and a niece Elke Seiter-Hussein and her children Majid, Linda, Nora, and Malek in Soellingen, Germany.
Preceding him in death were his mother Clara; his wives, Hilde and Mayme; brothers Ed Scroggins and Larry Anson; and a sister, Pat Stone.
In place of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or to the First Baptist Church Building Fund at PO Box 437, Cache, OK 73527.
