Message: Jason Craig Smith The funeral for Jason Craig Smith, 34, of Athens will be at noon Monday at McConnell Funeral Home with John Smith officiating. Burial will be in Sandlin Cemetery. Visitation is 10:30 a.m. to noon Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Smith died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, in Athens.Survivors include his wife, Vickie Smith of Athens; son, Deavon Rutherford; daughter, Ivy Rutherford; father, David E. Smith and wife Carrie of Athens; brother, Mike Smith and wife Leslie of Athens.Jason was born June 13, 1974 in Limestone County to David E. Smith and Barbara Scroggins Smith. Jason Smith loved his wife, Vickie, and did all he could to be a good husband to her. She loved him and will always miss him. Jason loved Ivy and Deavon as if they were his own children. He helped Vickie guide and direct them as they needed. Jason used to sit and listen to Ivy read her poems. He enjoyed them and encouraged her to pursue her poetic dream. Jason shared the Bible with Deavon and guided him to know the truth of Jesus Christ, which then Deavon was saved and baptized. We are all thankful for his guidance in this. Jason was known by his many friends as "Jaybird." All who had the opportunity to meet him enjoyed his company and his kindness. Jason was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Scroggins Smith.Pallbearers will be family and friends.
