Deceased Name: Granville Preston Hamm
Granville Preston Hamm "Hamm," "Papaw Bigs," 90, who resided with his daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Dean Akers of Catlettsburg, formerly of Kenova, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
He was born Jan. 22, 1919, in Rowan County, Ky., a son of the late Robert Preston and Sarah Emma (Hyatt) Hamm. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Tennie Gue Hamm.
He is survived by his seven children, Junior Hamm, Diane Arnett, Ernie Hamm, Sarah Akers, Kathy LeMaster, Mary Sue Bailey and Robert Hamm; 23 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
Additional survivors include a brother, Oval Hamm, and two sisters, Dorothy Cox and Essie Gue Smith.
Mr. Hamm was also preceded in death by three brothers, Lorren Hamm, Arvil Glenn Hamm and Elmer Hamm, and two sisters, Maggie Elswick and Anna Myrtle Scroggins [36660].
He was a member of Catlettsburg Church of God and was a retired custodian of 30 years at First Baptist Church of Kenova. Mr. Hamm proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and spent seven months and three days as a POW at the Stalog 7A Camp in Mooseburg, Germany. He received the Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Marksman Medal. Mr. Hamm was a member of Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2009, at Catlettsburg Church of God with Bishop Steve Mays and Tom Mullins officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Kenova.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home in Ceredo.
