JOHNSON, Astrid C. Astrid C. Johnson, 87, of Madison, died Sunday (November 9, 2008). She was the wife of the late Eugene C. Johnson. She was born in Arendal, Norway on July 30, 1921, to Halvor and Magda Baasland Gjertsen. At the age of six, she immigrated to the U.S. with her parents and two brothers. Astrid grew up in Brooklyn, NY. After marrying Gene, she lived in New Britain and Newington. In 1948, they built a summer cottage in Madison. In 1973, Astrid and Gene made Madison their full-time residence. Astrid was a long-time member of the Bethany Covenant Church of New Britain and the First Congregational Church of Madison. Astrid served her community through participation in Meals on Wheels and was an active member of the Guilford Garden Club where she pursued her lifetime enjoyment of flowers. Astrid leaves behind four children: Barbara Farmer of Leawood, KS, Brenda Scrogin [47448] and son-in-law, Colonel (Ret) Thomas Scrogin [47557] of Niceville, FL, Kristine Glass of Madison, and Ronald Johnson of North Branford; three grandchildren: Jasen Farmer of Edgewater, MD, Corey Farmer of Austin, TX and Courtney Farmer of Tampa, FL. Her great granddaughter, Leilani Emma was born on 11/29/07. Private services were held on Thursday, November 13, at Swan Funeral Home, Madison. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Guilford Garden Club, 423 Whitfield St., Guilford, CT 06437 or the First Congregational Church, 26 Meetinghouse Lane, Madison, CT 06443 in memory of Astrid C.
