E. Dudley Scrogin

Message: [8124] E. Dudley Scrogin E. Dudley Scrogin, age 91 died September 3, 2008 at his home in Bradenton, FL. He was born in Bradenton and graduated from Bradenton (now Manatee) High School in 1935. He attended the University of Florida 1935-1938, receiving an Associates of Arts Degree. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Scrogin was a retired Professional Engineer and a retired Commander, USNR. He was a Fellow Member of Florida Engineering Society, Myakka Chapter, Past President of the Florida Engineering Society, Miami Chapter, a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, a Life Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a Life Member of the Military Officers Association of America, Bradenton Chapter. He went on active duty in the Navy as Ensign, USNR in October 1941 at the U. S. Naval Station, Key West, FL where he was Officer in Charge of the Diesel Engine Repair Shop. He married Jean Hitchcolk of Bradenton May 27, 1943. In January 1944 Lieutenant Scrogin was transferred to the South Pacific, serving as Assistant Force Maintenance Officer, Purvis Bay, Solomon Islands until April 1945. From May to September 1945 he was Officer-in-Charge of Landing Craft Repair Base #2, Russell Islands, South Pacific. He stayed active in the Naval Reserves and his last position was as Commanding Officer, Naval Reserve Research Company 6-39, Miami, FL. He retired as Commander, USNR in 1977. The majority of his civilian career was spent in the supervision of operations and maintenance of power plants for Florida Power and Light Company, retiring in Miami, FL November 1980 after more than 33 years with that company. He and his wife, returned to Bradenton in 1991. His wife of 53 years, Jean Hitchcolk Scrogin, died on September 3, 1996. He is survived by his companion Priscilla B. Gryder, daughters Suzanne (Ralph) Coley of Cohasset, MA, Catherine (Mark) Bir of Fort Myers, FL and foster daughter Karen (David) Paterno of Melbourne, FL; six grandchildren: Jennifer Coley (Marty) Geoghegan, R. Travis (Christine) Coley, Megan Bir (Stuart) Rubio, Brian R. Bir, Erin Bir (Christopher) Paul and Traci Paterno (Brett) Wood: and seven great grandchildren: Finn and Owen Geoghegan, Blaise Coley, Ashton and Ethan Rubio and Sierra and Dallas Wood. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 13, 2008 in the Chapel at Manasota Memorial Park, 1221 53rd Ave E, Bradenton, FL.
