Memorial services for Ruth Squyres Grant, 85, of Lufkin will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church Henderson Chapel with Reverend Carol Turner officiating. Private burial will be held in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Mrs. Grant was born October 27, 1922 in Center, Texas. She was the daughter of the late Bunker and Mae (Scrogins) Squyres. Mrs. Grant graduated from Lufkin High School in 1940 and was a Charter Life Member of the Lufkin High School Alumni Association. She trained at Scott and White Hospital and became a registered medical technologist in 1943. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Stephen F. Austin State University and taught school in Lufkin for 23 years. Mrs. Grant was a certified school counselor. She retired from teaching in 1978 but continued to educate the public through her books and lectures on the history of Lufkin. She was the author of Lufkin Street Stories. Methodist Church of Lufkin, the Seekers Sunday School Class, the Literary Club, the Angelina County Historical Commission and the Angelina County Genealogy and Historical Society. She was a member and past officer of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Grant was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ted L. Grant; grandson, Scott Faviell; brother, Bryce Squyres; and sisters, Margaret Smithhart and Rachel Perry Dowling. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Richard Faviell of Lufkin; grandsons, Christopher and Jonathan Faviell; brothers, Ralph and Reginald Squyres; sister-in-law, Kathryn Squyres; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kurth Memorial Library, 706 South Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904 or Pinecrest Retirement Community, 1302 Tom Temple Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904. The family will welcome friends and loved ones!
