Kronholm, Gunnar Edward Age 94, of Shoreview, died on May 11, 2007 at the North Memorial Residential Hospice in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. He was an extraordinary man who was devoted to his family, unwavering in his faith, and committed to service. He was born on October 1, 1912 in a log house near Cook, Minnesota; graduated from Tower-Soudan High School and Hibbing Junior College. Gunnar began his business career at the Androy Hotel in Hibbing, Minnesota but in 1937 began a banking career that included positions in Cook, St. Paul, Moose Lake, Crookston, and South St. Paul. He retired from banking in 1977 as President of Drovers State Bank in South St. Paul, the flagship bank of the Bremer banks. Shortly thereafter he began a second career at Bethel College & Seminary (now Bethel University) that continued until his death. He first became involved at Bethel in the 1960s as a parent for the first of what would become four children and five grandchildren to attend the Col!
lege or the Seminary. In the 1970s he began teaching a banking course and then began finding the philanthropic support that Bethel needed to begin its business major. In 1979 he began serving as a special assistant to the president and in that role took on many assignments including interim vice president for business affairs and interim vice president for development. He served as a Bethel Regent from 1979-1984 and was a founding Governor of the Bethel Foundation. Gunnar was a committed church leader wherever he lived, serving in a broad range of roles including Sunday school teacher, building committee member, deacon, chair, and foundation member. He helped found three churches-in Roseville, Crookston; and South St. Paul. He had deep commitments to the Baptist General Conference and held leadership positions within that denomination. He also found ways to be involved in the communities in which he lived. His service on the school board in Crookston included one term as ch!
air. His lifelong involvement with the Boy Scouts was recognized when
he was presented with the Silver Beaver Award. He served as a board member of many non-profit organizations and as a volunteer of countless civic organizations. Erickson, Helen L. (Lief) Age 88, of Edina MN. Born in Forest Lake, MN. Preceded in death by parents, Andrew and Anna Erickson and four brothers, three of whom died in their nineties. Survived by five nephews and nieces and families. Died on May 9, 2007 at Edina Care Center after many years of declining health. Helen attended Public School in Forest Lake and graduated from high school in 1936 as valedictorian of her class. She attended Gustavus Adolphus College for one year and then went to Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis to study nursing, graduating in 1940 as a registered nurse. In preparation for a career as a foreign missionary she then attended the Lutheran Bible Institute and graduated in 1944. That same year she was called as a missionary to Tanzania by Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Because of World War II her six month journey to Tanzania included a three month wait in Portugal and continued around the Cape of Good Hope. She was assigned to be nurse in char!
ge at Iambi Hospital by the Central Synod of the Lutheran Church. During the four year term the need for a nursing school became evident and she was asked to study nursing education during her home leave. She received a Bachelor of Science in nursing education at the University of MN. Upon her return to Tanzania she was assigned to Kiomboi Hospital and opened a three year school of nursing. This necessitated writing a syllabus in the Swahili language. She graduated her first class during this four year term. During these years she developed a keen interest in the tribal language (Ilyamba) of the area and while on her next leave studied linguistics. In subsequent home leaves she got a Masters Degree with a major in linguistics and minors in anthropology and foreign language teaching. The Church in Tanzania requested her to be the Ilyamba literature secretary in addition to updating Ilyamba New Testament manuscripts in conjunction with the British and Foreign Bible Society Lo!
ndon. She prepared other Ilyamba literature for the Church. In recogni
tion of her unique educational and Swahili language skills she was asked in 1970 by the Lutheran Church of Tanzania to open a language school for new missionaries. During the following thirteen years she held 22 courses and had 500 students. One of her text books is available on the internet. She retired in 1983 at age 65.
