Pauline J. Cousins

ROSEBORO — Mrs. Pauline “Polly” Jones Cousins, 80, of Roseboro, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, in her home following a short battle with cancer. A native of Virginia, she lived most of her adult years in North Carolina. Formerly of Troutman and Windsor, she was blessed with a long and good life, a loving family and many special friends.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Charles Cousins of Roseboro; her children whom she adored, Cathy Veal and her husband, Bill, of Aurora, Ill., and Kevin Cousins of Monroe; her special double first cousin who was like a sister, Marian Baughman of Germantown, Tenn.; her sisters-in-law, Becky Jones of Petersburg, Va., Newell Painter of Asheboro, Hilda Cobb and her husband, P.G., of Charlotte, Geneva Hunt of Wendell and Gail Cousins of Knightdale; her brother-in-law, Burrell Cousins and his wife, Nell, of Knightdale; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Susie Webb Jones; father, Donald Bruce Jones; brothers, Wilfred Jones and Bruce Jones; and infant daughter, Claire Cousins.

A graduate of Westhampton College at the University of Richmond, Polly was an elementary school history teacher in the challenging early years of desegregation. She enjoyed teaching, playing bridge, painting, sewing, learning sign language, earning her real estate license, participating in church activities, playing the piano, and following politics and current events. She was a kind and compassionate child of God, who often befriended the underdog and supported worthy causes.

The family will receive guests from 7 to 9 tonight at Butler Funeral Home, 401 W. Roseboro St.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Revs. Rod Mullens and Carrie Parrish officiating. Burial will follow in Roseboro Cemetery.

Mrs. Gatlin was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and had worked for the Gatesville Independent School District for several years.

She was a member of the Broadway Junk Band.

Geneva R. Francis

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Mrs. Geneva Ralls Francis, 72, of Fredericksburg, formerly of Fayetteville, N.C., died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, in her son and daughter-in-law's residence in Fredericksburg.

Born March 1, 1934, in Waurika, Okla., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Sadie Rainwaters Ralls. She was the wife of the late Thomas G. Francis Jr., whom she was married to for 50 years and predeceased her on June 29, 2002.

She was retired from the Maryland State Department of Corrections, having worked with Juvenile Services.

Surviving are her son, Robert G. Francis of Fayetteville; son and daughter-in-law, retired Col. Thomas G. Francis III and Anita Francis of Fredericksburg; daughter and son-in-law, Judy L. and Doug Leese of Hanover, Pa.; brothers, Earl and Cletus Ralls of Waurika; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by siblings Vernice, Christine, Wanita, Bob and Marvin.

A funeral service will be held Saturday in Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Shamer of Zion United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Deer Park Cemetery, Smallwood.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Layton A. West

SPRING LAKE — Mr. Layton Allen West, 70, of Spring Lake, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, in his residence.

Mr. West owned and operated Layton's VW for most of his life. He was a member and associate pastor of Crossroad Community Church. He was active in mission work and assisted with Meals On Wheels in Moore County. He also served in the Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at 2 p.m., officiated by the Revs. David Bibey, Jerome Pope and Bynum Mauney in Crossroad Community Church in Carthage. Interment will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park in Fayetteville.

Mr. West is survived by his wife, Iva Marie West; a son, Layton Allen West Jr. and his wife, Dana, of Broadway; two daughters, Amanda Jean Fink and her husband, Robert, and Carla Marie Emmons and her husband, John, all of Spring Lake; four brothers, Graham W. West and Dwight W. West, both of Spring Lake, Bruce E. West of Lillington and Roy W. West of Kentucky; a sister, Annie M. Williams of McIntosh, Ala.; and seven grandchildren, Jessica Emmons, Taylor West, Robby Fink, Matthew Fink, Justin Emmons, Dean Emmons and Layton “Al” West III.

The family will receive friends at Adcock Funeral Home in Spring Lake from 7 to 9 tonight.

ELIZABETHTOWN — Nellie G. Kemp, 70, of 600 McLeod St., died Tuesday in New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Edward W. O'Neal

Mr. Edward Warren O'Neal, 82, of Fayetteville, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006. He was born Aug. 2, 1924, in Hamlet.

Ed was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, serving in the Phillipines in World War II. Ed and his wife, Eldred, were the original owners of the Country Kitchen Seafood Restaurant and enjoyed meeting and serving their friends and customers for many years. He was employed by Canada Dry Bottling Co. before opening the restaurant and was an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eldred Randolph O'Neal; his parents, P.C. and Edna O'Neal; and a brother, Robert L. O'Neal.

Survived by: Son, Robert E. O'Neal; daughters, Cheryl O'Neal Long and Beth O'Neal Scroggins; grandchildren, Tracy Driggers, Matthew Driggers, Brian O'Neal, Bradley O'Neal, Lauren Scroggins-Kuhns, Christopher Scroggins and Johnny Long; great-grandchildren, Cory Driggers and Cristiana Scroggins; a special brother-in-law, Stanley Randolph; and many nieces and nephews.
