Obituary - Lincoln News, 6 January 1898

A telegram was received today from Crown Point, Ind., announcing the death
of Russell Scroggin, formerly a Logan County citizen but of late years a
resident of Portsmouth, Iowa. The deceased was a son of Russell Scroggin
of Mt. Pulaski, brother of L. K. Scroggin, and for many years was a cashier
in the First National Bank at Mt. Pulaski. The germs of consumption took
root and Mr. Scroggin went to Iowa, where he started a bank, afterwards
reorganizing it as a state bank and serving as cashier. The physicians of
that place gave up hope and he was sent to Colorado, but to no avail. He
then placed himself under the care of the Chinese physician at Crown Point,
but no good resulted and death came as a relief at 8:15 this morning. He
leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss. The deceased was an
uncle of Mrs. A. G. Drobisch and a cousin of Mrs. A. L. Anderson. Nothing
is known of the funeral arrangements.

Obituary - Lincoln News, 10 January 1898

The funeral of Russell Scroggin was held Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at
Mt. Pulaski. In spite of the inclement weather, a large concourse of
people was present to pay a last tribute to the dead. The Modern Woodmen
of America, Mt. Pulaski, attended in a body. Rev. Dabney had charge of the
services and, after a beautiful sermon, the remains were taken to the
Steenbergen Cemetery and laid to rest beside the sleeping mother.

MARTHA E. SCROGGIN DIED TUESDAY, JULY 3 AT BALLWIN, MO.

Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Scroggin, a native of Mount Pulaski vicinity, died at
12:15 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, 1956, in a nursing home in Ballwin, Mo.,
where she had been a patient for some time. Her health had been failing
for some time. She was aged 91 years, 3 months, and 25 days.
Decedent was born Feb. 8, 1865 on a farm southwest of Mount Pulaski, near
Lake Fork, a daughter of Jerry and Mary Copeland Buckles, Logan County
pioneers. There were 11 children in this well-known family, and she was
the last member of the family.
During the late 1880's, she was united in marriage to Russell Franklin
Scroggin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell S. Scroggin of the Mount Pulaski
community. The wedding took place in the Mount Pulaski Christian
Church. They farmed near the city several years, then moved to Portsmouth,
Iowa, where Mr. Scroggin started a bank. In 1898, when on a trip from
Portsmouth to Crown Point, Ind., to consult a well-known physician
concerning his health, Mr. Scroggin passed away.
Mrs. Scroggin and children, Dessa and Donald, came from Iowa to Lincoln,
Ill., and resided a few years, the children attending school there. They
later returned to Iowa to make their home. Since 1933, Mrs. Scroggin had
made her home most of the time with her daughter, Dessa, wife of Col. Henry
M. van Hook, in Clayton, a suburb of St. Louis, Mo.
Besides her daughter, Mrs. van Hook, decedent is survived by a son, Donald
R. Scroggin, of Lake Forest, north of Chicago; and three
grandchildren. There are many relatives living in the Mount Pulaski area.
The body arrived in Mount Pulaski at 3 a.m. Wednesday, over the Illinois
Central Railroad, and was taken to the Schahl Funeral Home, where funeral
services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 5, conducted by Rev. John
M. Webb, pastor of the Christian Church. Appropriate organ music was
played by Mrs. Frank E. Turley.
