Thomas James SCROGGINS, through his mother Conde GILBERT, was the great-grandson of John Gaines Biard, a mason and stonecutter. Gaines BIARD was one of three pioneer brothers who established Biardstown, Texas (in Lamar County) in 1848. They came by flatboat all the way from Alabama and up the Red River. Gaines BIARD's maternal grandfather, Ezekiel STONE, fought in the American Revolution for the state of North Carolina.
