Olon Belcher

CENTREVILLE Olon Belcher, 95, a lifelong resident of Bibb County, died Feb. 15, 2010, at his home in Centreville. Services will be 12 noon Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at the Centreville Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Fuller officiating. Burial will follow in Pineland Memorial Cemetery with Rockco Funeral Home of Centreville directing. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church.

Mr. Belcher attended schools in Centreville and was a 1934 graduate of Bibb County High School. From 1934 to 1938, Mr. Belcher attended the University of Alabama School of Engineering.

Mr. Belcher played tackle for the University of Alabama during his college years and was a member of both the 1935 and 1938 Rose Bowl squads.

After leaving the University of Alabama, Mr. Belcher went into the lumber business with his father, H.A. Belcher, and in 1943 purchased the L.L. Ragland Mill in Brent. His business interests grew from the plant in Brent to numerous other local businesses along with residential and commercial real estate development.

Mr. Belcher invested his life and his interest in the communities of Brent and Centreville. A lifelong Brent Civitan member and former Kiwanis Club member, he was always involved in community affairs.

He served his church as a deacon and was a “builder” as Chairman of the Centreville Baptist Church Building Committee. He was elected Trustee at Judson College by the Alabama Baptist Convention in 1962.

Mr. Belcher married Hazel Pierson of Holt in 1940, who preceded him in death in 1999. He is survived by their five children, Olon P. Belcher of Fairhope, Jan Queen (Richard) of Montgomery, Beverly Scroggins [45942?] (William) [45941?] of Tuscaloosa, Brent Belcher (Delilah) of Centreville, and Otha Belcher of Centreville.

Families of the children of Olon and Hazel Belcher include grandchildren and great-grandchildren who survive PawPaw.

Pallbearers are grandsons, Scott Scroggins, Will Scroggins, Jesse Scroggins, Rich Queen, and Jeff Queen.

Honorary pallbearers are all former employees of Mr. Belcher's businesses in the community, deacons and former deacons of the Centreville Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Centreville Baptist Church or one's favorite charity.
