GROTTOES — Madeline Miller Beck, 80, of Grottoes passed away Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at her home after a valiant battle with cancer. Madeline was born March 12, 1929, in Washington, D.C., and was a daughter of the late Isaac B. [49601
:6, FaG:59662329] and Margaret (Scroggins) [44801:6] Miller.
She grew up in Washington, D.C., and attended private Catholic schools, including Notre Dame Academy. She was a retired nurses' aide at Western State Hospital in Staunton and was a founding member of Holy Infant Catholic Church in Elkton. She was a member of "The Greatest Generation" and the last surviving member of her immediate family. She also was a longtime Washington Redskins fan.
On Nov. 23, 1949, she realized her dream to move to her Daddy's hometown, Grottoes, to marry a farmer, Harry W. Beck [tba, FaG:63249655], who preceded her in death Feb. 5, 1974.
Madeline is survived by three daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Morris of Weyers Cave, Kathleen L. Andes, wife of Jerry Andes of Grottoes, and Maria J. Beck, wife of John Eisenberg of Richmond, and a son, Harry W. Beck Jr., husband of Phyllis Beck of Mount Sidney. She also is survived by four grandchildren, Angela Myers and husband, Jason, Penny Mitchell and husband, Jerry, Clayton Morris and Harry W. Beck III; four great-grandchildren, Zachary and Cole Myers and Justin and Connor Mitchell; best friends and extended family, Diane and Ed Hager, Kimberly Wilkins and husband, Patrick, Robert Allison and wife, Samantha, Christy Allamong and husband, Tim, Toby and Tyler Allamong, Cheyanne and Colby Allison and Hunter, Chloe and Clara Wilkins; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Miller and Ruth Reidenbaugh; and nieces, Linda Hutchinson and Sue Ellen Adkins.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Irvin "Sonny" B. Miller and Robert Franklin Miller, and a sister, Dorothy Miller.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at Holy Infant Catholic Church in Elkton, with Father Dan Bain and RMH Hospice Chaplain Richard Vaught officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes. Friends also may call at Madeline's home anytime Wednesday.
The family would like to express their love and heartfelt thanks to Mom's second family, Diane and Ed Hager, RMH Hospice, caregivers Karen Wimer and Sue Gery and other loving volunteers who showered Mom with love and attention these last eight months and were entertained to the end by her sharp wit and irrepressible humor.
