ABINGDON, Va. – Kathryn "Kate" Novella Wallace Scroggin, 92, passed peacefully from this earth to her heavenly home on Monday, July 20, 2009, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Kate was born in Gnatville, Ala., on July 9, 1917, and lived most of her life in Piedmont, Ala., before moving to Virginia to be near her son. She was a loving, generous and kind mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, wife, aunt and friend. She was known for her strength of character, hospitality and truly amazing cooking. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Kit" Scroggin [30738]; brothers, Willard, Morris and Woodrow Wallace; and her sister, Geanette Morgan. She is survived by her son, Joe Scroggin [30742] and daughter-in-law Libby [39497] of Abingdon; two granddaughters, Holly Taylor of Blountville, Tenn., and Crystal Scroggin of Nashville, Tenn.; and a great-grandson, Asher William Taylor of Blountville. She will also be especially missed by her constant furry companion, Paco. The family offers a special thanks to her loving caregivers, Darlene Goodson and Virginia Williams. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Abingdon Church of Christ, 19508 Dennison Drive, Abingdon. Funeral and graveside services will be held in Kate's hometown of Piedmont at Thompson Funeral Home and Piedmont Memory Gardens on Thursday and Friday. Mrs. Scroggin was born in the Gnatville Community on July 9, 1917, and lived most of her life in Piedmont before moving to Virginia nine years ago to be near her son. Mrs. Scroggin retired from Farmers and Merchants Bank in Piedmont, was a member of the Abingdon Church of Christ and was a former member of the Piedmont Church of Christ. She was a loving, generous, and kind mother grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, wife, aunt and friend. She was known for her strength of character, hospitality, and truly amazing cooking. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Kit" Scroggin; brothers, Willard, Morris and Woodrow Wallace and her sister, Geanette Morgan. She is survived by her son, Joe Scroggin and daughter-in-law, Libby, of Abingdon; two granddaughters, Holly Taylor, of Blountville, Tenn. and Cryatal Scroggin, of Nashville, Tenn.; and a great-grandson, Asher William Taylor, of Blountville, Tenn. Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory in Piedmont with Mr. Bill Haywood officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to services. Graveside services will be at Friday at 10 a.m. at Piedmont Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Mike Wallace, Blake Morrison, Cale Morrison and Bill Scroggin.
