Log truck driver passes away

A log truck driver from Summerville whose truck ran off a road in western Whitfield County on April 20 has died.

Freddy Dale Scroggins, 32, died at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga last week. He was employed by Shaw Industries and also worked with Owens Logging in Rome.

Scroggins is believed to have lost control of his truck on a curve on Highway 201 west of Westside. He was airlifted to Erlanger.

"We think he may have went off the road at that bad curve and overcorrected," said Paulette Owens of Owens Logging. "I guess we'll never know how it happened."

Scroggins spoke to emergency workers after he was cut out of his truck and answered doctors' questions on the evening of the wreck. Owens said he was improving until last week.

"He had gotten better," she said. "They had to take a portion of his skull out to relieve the pressure, and when they took the packing out last week they told his father he was progressing — he sat up in bed and was moving his limbs. Then his blood pressure bottomed out last Wednesday and they couldn't get him out of it."

Scroggins leaves behind two daughters. Owens said he worked part time as a log truck driver.

Freddy Dale Scroggins, 32, of Summerville, died on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Erlanger Hospital.

Mr. Scroggins was born in Rome, Ga. on November 4, 1976, son of Roger Dale Scroggins [53086, fb] and Brenda Gail Rich Peek [53087, fb]. He was employed with Shaw Industries and also worked in the trucking industry. Mr. Scroggins was a member of the Chesterfield Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, J.C. Scroggins; and maternal grandmother, Lucille Rich.

Mr. Scroggins is survived by his daughters, Leah Jae Scroggins [tba] and Laci Cordle [tba] of Summerville; father, Roger Dale Scroggins, Summerville; mother and step-father, Brenda Gail and Rodney Peek, Summerville; maternal grandfather, J.T. Rich, Summerville; paternal grandmother, Mary Scroggins, Hermitage, Ark.; brothers, Jonathan Scroggins [53080], Marcus Lee, and Lucas Lee of Summerville; sister, Brandi Scherer, Summerville; and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services for Mr. Scroggins will be held Saturday, at 2 p.m. in the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Hogg officiating. Interment will follow in Summerville Cemetery.

Mr. Scroggins will be in state at Mason Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.
