E. Russell Phillips, 76, of Carrollton, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
He was born Aug. 9, 1932, in White Hall, the son of Ira and Marie Jennerjohn Phillips. He married Monna Hillis on May 26, 1955, in Carrollton, and she survives.
He is also survived by three daughters, Joan (husband, Jack) Staples and Peggy (husband, Mark) Walker, both of Carrollton and Carla [31707] (husband, Dennis [31710]) Scroggins of Berdan; two sons, Bob (wife, Becky) Phillips of DeKalb and Rick (wife, Becky) Phillips of Carrollton; 13 grandchildren, Rhonda Roodhouse, Robyn Schumaker, Bobby Phillips, Bradley Phillips, Jared Staples, Jana Rimbey, Jena Staples, Jake Scroggins, Luke Scroggins, Tyler Scroggins, Cody Walker, Phillip Walker and Chloe Walker; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Retha Rawe of Carrollton, Sue (husband, Charles) Costello of Greenfield, Marcella (husband, Stephen) Gotschall of Springfield and Lula Belle Ballinger of Pensacola, Fla.; and one brother, Garry Bateman of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Cecyle Bateman Phillips; one brother, Donald Phillips; and a sister, Gwillia Carter.
Mr. Phillips graduated from Carrollton High School with the class of 1951. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict, stationed for two years in Alaska. He was a tractor driver at Olin Brass Mill in Alton for 41 years, retiring in 1993. He served as a Democratic precinct committeeman for approximately 25 years. He loved horse shows, playing cards and traveling to Branson, Mo., and Nashville, Tenn. He was a little league baseball coach for a number of years and was a member of the Berdan Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton, with burial at Belltown Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until time of services Saturday.
