Eva Mae (Brown) Scroggin 1926-2008

Eva Mae Scroggin, 82, of Stagner Drive, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at Carlsbad Medical Center. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. today at Denton-Wood Funeral Home.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Bacon officiating. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery.

Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Eva Mae Scroggin was born July 13, 1926, in Alpin, Ark., to Roy Jefferson and Ida (Cox) Brown. She attended schools at Alpin and Perryville, Ark., graduating in 1944. Eva graduated with a BSE degree from Arkansas State Teachers College in 1947 and earned an ME degree from Eastern New Mexico University in 1971.

She married Mike Scroggin June 1, 1948, in Perryville, Ark. Eva taught school in Arkansas before moving to Carlsbad in 1952. She taught school at Alta Vista and Mid High School from 1965 to 1985. Eva was a member of First Baptist Church since 1952. She served in many capacities at church, teaching Sunday school, directing adult Sunday school departments, singing in the choir and volunteering on various committees.

Eva was also involved in the Women's Missionary Union and New Mexico Camper's on Mission. She was active in starting the Carlsbad Community Kitchen in 1992, and served as a team leader. Eva volunteered in the beauty shop at Lakeview Christian Home for many years. She was a charter member of the Carlsbad Gideon Auxiliary since 1964, and a member of Caveman Sam's.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Zee Brown; husband, Mike Scroggin; daughter, Annie J. Manganaro; and brother, James "Buddy" Brown.

Survivors include son, Don Mike Scroggin and wife, Debbie, of Rio Rancho; son-in-law, John Manganaro of Carlsbad; three granddaughters: Joanna Manganaro of New York City, N.Y., Julia Manganaro of Carlsbad, and Whitley Scroggin of Rio Rancho; two grandsons: Austin Jenkins of Rio Rancho, and Dalton Scroggin of Rio Rancho; sister, Donna Steely of Wake Forest, N.C.; and brother, Bill Brown of North Little Rock, Ark. Pallbearers will be Pete Van Winkle, Truman Ferguson, E.T. Holland, Glen Porter, Forrest Dickerson and Roscoe Melvin.

Honorary pallbearers are all her many friends
