Cora Lathon, 101, also known as Nanny, died May 10, 2004. She was born on October, 18, 1902 to the late Robert and Eugenia Hicks in Saucier. There were six children born to this union.


Cora attended Marion County School. She accepted Christ at a very young age. Soon after moving to Biloxi with her parents she joined Bethel Baptist Church under the guidance of Rev. Louis Johnson. She later met and married Brother James Lathon.


She was a member of the Senior Missionary Society, sang in the choir, worked on the kitchen committee, a member of the Mother's Board, and a member of the Court of Calanthe #33. She was a guardian angel to at least six generations of children as well as adults.


She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lathon; a stepdaughter, Evelyn Smith; five siblings, Roscoe, Chester and John Hicks, Ruby Ray and Sarah Hicks; a nephew, Roland Hicks; a niece, Elaine Guichard; and two stepgrandchildren, Clothilde Hughes and Charles Smith.


She leaves to mourn her passing, one adopted daughter, Marlyene Scroggins; a loving and devoted great-niece, LaMonica (James) Greenlee; one granddaughter, Jayme Scroggins; one great-great-nephew, James Lathon Greenlee; 3 stepgrandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; 30 stepgreat-great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.


Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 18, 2004 with visitation from 9-11 a.m. at the New Bethel Baptist Church in Biloxi.


Burial will be in Biloxi Cemetery.


Funeral arrangements entrusted to Dickey Bros. and Hartwell Christian Mortuary in Biloxi.
