Paul D. Hofgren [44214]

Paul D. Hofgren, 84, died at 3:20 a.m. Thursday, May 25, 2006, at Christian Hospital in St. Louis County. He was born Oct. 14, 1921, in Aurora, Ill., to Paul F. and Helen Duval Hofgren.

He married the former Dorothy A. Owen on Dec. 29, 1945, in Alton. She survives.

A U.S. Navy World War II veteran, he was a butcher at Hofgren Grocery in East Alton for 37 years and an accountant at Jefferson Smurfit Corp. for 15 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Wood River Masonic Lodge 1062 for 57 years, a past patron of the Eastern Star, a member of the Anaid Shrine, the East St. Louis Scottish Rite and Wood River Order of DeMolay and a leader of a Boy Scout Explorer troop. He loved golfing, camping and weaving.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald Hofgren of Fosterburg and Dennis and Donna Hofgren of Alton; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Gerald Scroggins of Bethalto; six grandchildren, Brandon and Anthony Hofgren, Dana Middleton, Anna Durbin, Katie Hofgren and Zachary Scroggins; two great-grandchildren, Kara Middleton and Morgan Hofgren; and a sister, Dorothy Morehead of Wood River.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until services at noon by Wood River Masonic Lodge 1062, followed by funeral services, all at Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church in Alton. The Rev. David Olson will officiate.

Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey, with full military rites by Alton VFW Post 1308.

Memorials may be made to Twelfth St. Presbyterian Church in Alton.
