SCROGGINS, Raymond, age 94 of Tallassee, Alabama, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 11, 2005. He was born October 25, 1910, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, to John Tom and Ella Scroggins, and has resided in Tallassee, Alabama, since 1979. After graduating from Howard College (Samford University) in Birmingham, Alabama, with a degree in History, he attended Southern Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Rev. Scroggins was pastor of East Tallassee Baptist Church from 1954 to 1962. Through the years, he also was pastor of South Roebuck Baptist Church (formerly Pine Grove Baptist), Irondale Baptist Church, 66th Street Baptist Church, all in Jefferson County, Alabama; First Baptist Church, Eminence, Kentucky; First Baptist Church, Opp, Alabama; First Baptist Church, Columbiana, Alabama; Good Hope Baptist Church and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, both in Elmore County, Alabama. After retirement, Rev. Scroggins served as interim and visiting pastor for churches in the area. He remained a member of East Tallassee Baptist Church and pastor emeritus, serving as a deacon and teacher into his nineties. He also served the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions as Chairman of the Executive Committee and served one term as Vice President of the Alabama Baptist Pastors' Association. He is lovingly survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Bennie Sue Welch Scroggins; his daughters, Myra Courtney (Rev. A. L. Courtney, Jr.) of Pell City, Alabama and Bernella Weldon (Joe) of Tallassee, Alabama; five grandchildren, Amy Courtney Marott (Geoffrey) of McDonough, Georgia; Michael Courtney (Traci) of Owasso, Oklahoma; Mark Weldon of Tallassee, Alabama; Stephen Weldon (Nancy) and Julia Weldon Benson (Clay) of Montgomery, Alabama; twelve great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; as well as a host of beloved friends and fellow pastors. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Joel Keith Weldon. Bro. Scroggins will be remembered by his family and friends as a loving husband, father, and grandfather; an educated and gifted student of the Bible; and an encouraging and gentle pastor and fellow believer in Jesus Christ. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at East Tallassee Baptist Church, Tallassee, Alabama, Thursday, May 12 at 2:00 pm. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 12:30 till 2:00 at the church. Pastor David Gill and Rev. Don Johnson will officiate with Jeffcoat-Linville Funeral Home directing. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those desiring to do so, make contributions to the church of their choice in his memory.
