(Updated 16 Dec 2014).

Mr. Henchey "Pete" Bectom Scroggins, 87, of Napa, died Jan. 7, 2005 at the Queen of the Valley Hospital following a brief illness.

Pete was a native of Texas, born May 3, 1917, the son of the late James Lee and Birdie Scroggins. He moved with his family as a young boy to New Mexico, where he attended what school he could, and then at age 16 headed west to California. In his early life he drove six-ton trucks working at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Later, he began his work as a boilermaker at the Kaiser Steel Co. Pete was a member of the local Boilermaker Union, and while at Kaiser served as shop steward. He retired from Kaiser Steel as a foreman after more than 32 years of service. Pete was an avid reader and was proud of the fact that he was self educated for the most part. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and often took long trips into the woods around Medicine Lake, and other favorite spots. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Pete was preceded in death by his siblings, his two sons, Ronnie and Doyal, and also by his first wife Lovada Scroggins. He is survived by his wife, Beverly L. Scroggins of Napa; two sons, Jim Scroggins, and his wife Helen, of Lower Lake, and John Scroggins, and Didi, of Napa. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandsons.

A service to celebrate Pete's life will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at Treadway & Wigger Funeral Chapel, 623 Coombs Street, Napa, with the Reverend Father Michael Angula, Chaplain at Queen of the Valley Hospital, officiating. Private committal will be at a later date in Tulocay Cemetery, Napa.

The family asks that memorials be made to The National Kidney Foundation of Northern California, 131 Steuart St., Suite 520, San Francisco, CA 94105.
