"Del Scroggins, 91, Springfield, passed away at 5:35 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, in St. John's Regional Health Center. He was born May 26, 1912, in Pleasant Hope, Mo., the son of Paris and Nell Apperson Scroggins. He graduated from Pleasant Hope High School in 1931. While there, he served as captain of the varsity basketball team which won many championships. After high school, he continued his education at SMS. At SMS, he played basketball for Coach Andy McDonald from 1932 to 1935, prior to his graduation. In 1979, he was inducted into the Southwest Missouri State University and Letterman Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame. On Oct. 20, 1934, he was united in marriage to Bessie Reiley. Prior to his retirement in 1974, he was the general manager of MFA Producers Grocery Company. Mr. Scroggins was a member of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Bessie R. ""Sonny"" Scroggins, two brothers and two sisters. Mr. Scroggins is survived by a son and his wife, The Reverend Gary K. and Sandy Scroggins, Brazil, Ind.; two daughters and their husbands, Ann and Dr. Robert M. ""Butch"" Laurenson, Crofton, Md., and Susan and Dr. Don Powell, Springfield; a sister-in-law, Frankie Scroggins, Pleasant Hope, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Susan Matchael, Shari Lawson and husband Ewell, Eloise Scroggins Harris and husband Lenny, Amanda, Stefan and Kelsey Scroggins, and Lynette and Erin Powell; and four great-grandchildren. CORRECTION: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Burial will follow in Hazelwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, 820 E. Cherry, Springfield, MO 65806.
