Deceased Name: Johnson, Luberta

MADISON - Luberta (Scroggins) Johnson, age 95, passed away on Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at St. Marys Care Center in Madison. Luberta was the daughter of Samuel and Carrie (Wesson) Scroggins, the youngest of eight children, born on Jan. 29, 1908, in Ozan, Ark. She married Gordon Johnson March 20, 1926, in Prescott, Ark. Luberta came to Madison in 1942 with her husband and four children. She worked for the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a cook for several sororities until her retirement. She was a member of St. Paul's A.M.E. Church and served 19 years on the stewardship board. She was also grand lecturer and grand chaplin of Unity Grand Chapter, and the first president. She also served for six years as a member of the Mary McLeod Bethume Club, and served as W.M. of Friendship Chapter No. 2, Madison, O.E.S. Luberta is survived by her daughter, Maxine Francis-Drinkard; a son, Virgil (Benny Mae) Johnson; three grandchildren, Daniel (Brenda) Francis, Maurice Sims, and Shereen Negroni; and a great-grandchild, Tatiana Lord. Luberta was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, in 1962; a daughter, Marion (Charles) Sims, in 2002; and a son, Gordon Negroni, in 2003. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at CRESS FUNERAL SERVICE, 6021 University Ave., Madison, at 12:30 p.m. with the Rev. Hubert Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. There will be a visitation on Friday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's A.M.E. Church, 4525 Diamond Drive, Madison WI 53714.
