CHINOOK -- Elden Nicholas "Nick" Gilcher, 88, died July 17, 2003 at his Chinook residence.

The son of Fred [40681] and Bertha (Scrogins) [40680] Gilcher, he was born Oct. 25, 1914 in Hood River, Ore. Mr. Gilcher grew up in Hood River and later in Bend, Ore., where he graduated from high school.

Following high school he moved to Longview, and in 1939 volunteered for service with the Canadian Air Force. With the outbreak of World War II he flew combat missions in the Battle of Britain and also served as an aviation instructor in Canada. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Longview where he worked in several capacities including as a painter and laborer.

He had maintained a vacation home in Chinook for a number of years and retired here 30 years ago. In younger years he enjoyed fishing and hunting in Alaska, and avidly fished the Columbia River in later years. He also enjoyed gardening.

Mr. Gilcher is survived by daughters Carol Mast of Cathlamet and Diane Grothen of Longview; step-daughters Shirley Mattern of Phoenix, Ariz., and Dorothy Leyden of University Place; brothers Glenn Gilcher [40685] of Umatilla, Ore., and Bob Gilcher [] of Hermiston, Ore.; sisters Miriam Stanley [40684?] and Barbara Dennis [] both of Longview and Gerry Hamar [] of Klamath Falls, Ore. He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie; son Dick Gilcher; daughter Jackie Thomas; brothers Dan and Jack Gilcher [40683]; sister Pat Fix [] and half-brothers Dorsey Scroggins [15174] and George Gilcher [].

Family and friends will gather Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the residence of Arlene Holland in Longview to honor his life. For information call (360) 425-2507.

The family wishes to acknowledge the friendship of his neighbors in Chinook, Roger and Brooke Weller and Oscar and Gladys Killian, who allowed him to maintain his independence in his final years. Cremation arrangements by Penttila's Chapel by The Sea, Long Beach.
