Charlyn Scroggins (Burkins)

Devoted supporter of theater arts, noted businesswoman, passionate animal advocate and

loving wife, Charlyn Scroggins (Burkins), 66, passed away unexpectedly November 25, 2016. Her style was unique and her excitement for her passions was unparalleled. Her larger-than-life personality was rivaled only by that of her laughter, which prominently filled not just her surroundings but also the many lives she touched. A born dreamer, Charlyn taught those close to her that a dream could be as large as one's wildest imagination. She lived her life without regret, always looking for her next great adventure.

Born March 6, 1950 in York, PA, Charlyn was a graduate of Firestone High School and The University of Akron. Her love for the arts and her boundless creativity led to many accomplishments, including study with the chief oboist of the world-renowned Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, managing the historic Akron Civic Theater, working as the chief costumer for Akron's Weathervane playhouse and creating, with her husband, Tim, an astonishing range of inspiring gifts for family members from exquisite flower arrangements to hand-crocheted baby clothes to artisan-quality quilts. For many years Charlyn was also a successful business entrepreneur in regional sports programming. She and her husband presided over a 13-acre farm where they cared for a barnyard of favorite animal friends including horses, goats and sheep as well as many adoring house pets and exotic birds.

Never one to shy away from someone or something needing a helping hand, Charlyn's altruism was expressed in many significant ways. Her love of theater led to support for The Human Race Theater Company in Dayton and her love for animals led to the fostering of over 100 abused animals from Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary.

Preceded in death by her beloved father, Charles Burkins, Charlyn is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Timothy Scroggins of Spencer; mother Evelyn Burkins of Akron; brother, Kenneth Burkins and sister-in-law, Kim Bruns Burkins of Akron; niece, Emily Burkins Adams and nephew-in-law, Mark Adams of Westlake; great-niece, Kendall Adams, the "love of her life"; nephew, Trevor Burkins of New York City; step-nephew, Christopher Bruns of Cleveland; and her dear friend, Deb Coch of Westlake, whom she thought of as her "long, lost sister."

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28 at the Akron Civic Theater. Remembrances may be made to Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary, 5623 New Milford Rd., Ravenna, OH 44266 and the Akron Civic Theater, 182 S. Main St., Akron, OH 44308.
