CHARLES MELVIN SCROGGINS

SCROGGINS, CHARLES MELVIN Charles Melvin Scroggins, age 79 of Gardendale, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2009. Mr. Scroggins was born in Montgomery, AL, the son of Clyde [49521] and Lucille [49522] Scroggins. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School where he excelled in sports, lettering in football, baseball and basketball. He received a scholarship to Hiwassee College in Madisonville, TN. After graduating, Mr. Scroggins joined the USAF Special Services serving in the Korean Conflict. When his enlistment was over, he played baseball for the Washington Senators in the Minor League. In 1958, Mr. Scroggins moved to Birmingham, enrolled at Birmingham Southern College, met and married his wife of 51 years, Shirley Hawkins [34356] of Gadsden, Al. While at BSC, he served as Director of the Five Points South YMCA. He also served with the Shades Valley and North Birmingham YMCA. The YMCA continued to be a part of his life until his illness in March 2008. Mr. Scroggins was a dedicated athlete, playing fast pitch soft ball, bowling, and in the last 40 years of his life enjoying golf to the fullest. He was a member of Castle Pines Country Club. He coached little league baseball, church league softball and basketball. In 1959, Mr. Scroggins joined J. H. Berry Realty Co., in the property management department, where he eventually became Director of Property Management. His relationship with the company lasted 31 years. In 1990, Mr. Scroggins joined the firm of Boothby Engle, Inc. Apartment Group as President and Chairman of the Board of Property Management. Mr. Scroggins continued to be affiliated with the company until his illness. Mr. Scroggins received his Certified Property Management designation in 1967 and was president of the North Alabama chapter. He received Manager of the Year, North Alabama Chapter in 1985, Outstanding Leadership, Dedication and Service awards in 1978 and 1990. He also served at the national level on the governing council of the Institute of Real Estate Management and as a member of the CPM Membership Standards Committee as well as Regional Vice President in 1987-1988. His service to the Lord was the joy of Mr. Scroggins' life. He joined Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church (Gardendale-Mt. Vernon UMC) in 1959. Thru the years he served as the Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of Finance Committee, Chairman of the Council on Ministries, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and as president of his beloved Fellowship Sunday School Class. Mr. Scroggins was preceded in death by his parents, sister Arlene Butland [49241] and brother John B. Scroggins [49236]. He is survived by his wife Shirley [34356], his son Kent [34358, fb] (Denise) [34359]; daughter Stephanie[34360] ; son Bragg [34361, fb]; grandchildren: Stephen [49032, fb], Hannah [49034, fb] and Leah [49033, fb]; sister, Florence Wood [53171]; along with nieces, nephews, extended family and devoted friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Organ Fund, The Kerrie Clemons Fund, or The Royal Family Kids Camp, C/O Gardendale Mt. Vernon UMC, 800 Crest Drive, Gardendale, AL 35071. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to New Beacon Hospice, in particular to Ray Whittaker and Vanessa Singleton for their special care. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Gardendale Mt. Vernon UMC. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. until service time at the church. Ridout's Gardendale Chapel directing.
