The Rev. Lawrence Harold Padgett, 84, of Waco, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Wesley Woods Alzheimer's Care Center with three generations of his loving family at his side. Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at OakCrest Funeral Home with his grandson Blake Padgett officiating assisted by the Rev. Ron Hill. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 11, at OakCrest Funeral Home, Waco.
Lawrence was the born in South Bosque, Texas, the youngest son of the late John Elijah Padgett and Lula Miller Padgett, and he has lived in Waco most of his life. He was the grandson of James Jefferson Padgett, a justice of the peace in Waco for 20 years. He graduated from South Bosque High School, and attended Baylor University. He married Ruby Scoggins on Nov. 3, 1941, in Waco. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He suffered from a long brave battle with Alzheimer's. He worked for 16 years at Universal Atlas Cement Co., and then pastored Baptist churches in both Texas and Louisiana for 20 years before retiring in 1973. After retirement, he worked a short time at Word Publishing. He was a member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a sister; eight brothers; and a son-in-law, Don Davis.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby; son, Joe Padgett [16318:V] and wife, Melissa, of Harker Heights; daughters, Dorothy Davis [16316:V], of Waco, and Betty Harper [16317:V]and husband, A.C., of DeRidder, La.; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and a step-great-great-grandchild; and many other family members and friends.
