Leland W. Scroggins, 86, died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, May 28, 2006, at Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Greenville.

He was born July 27, 1919, in Bunker Hill to Jesse Edward [279:L, FaG] and Mabel Grace (Tipton) [305:L, FaG] Scroggins.

He married the former Thelma Dunham [478:L, FaG] on May 5, 1945, in Bunker Hill.

He grew up in Bunker Hill on the family dairy farm. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees in the South Pacific from 1942 to 1945. He moved to Mulberry Grove in 1957 and was a salesman for H.P. Fuller. He was a member of the Mulberry Grove United Methodist Church, Gilham Lodge 809, where he was Past Master, Mulberry Grove American Legion Post 1180, where he was Past Commander, a charter member of the Mulberry Grove Lions Club and Order of the Eastern Star, where he was Past Worthy Matron.

He is survived by a son, Jerry Scroggins [514:L, fb, FaG] of Bethalto; a daughter, Bev Crandall [518:L, fb] of Mulberry Grove; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Glen Scroggins [487:L] of Bunker Hill and Eugene Scroggins [491:L, FaG] of Edwardsville; and a sister, Violetta Loveless [473:L] of Alton.

He was preceded in death by a son, James L. Scroggins [510:L, FaG]; three brothers, David [485:L], Paul [489:L] and Frank [493:L]; and four sisters, Evelyn Bloomfield [475:L],  Mae Hill [479:L], Winifred Gosch [481:L], and Bernice Johnson [483:L]

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with 8 p.m. Masonic services, at Mulberry Grove United Methodist Church, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Marshall Semingson will officiate.

Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bunker Hill Cemetery, with graveside military rites by Mulberry Grove American Legion Post 1180.

Memorials may be made to Mulberry Grove United Church of Christ, Gillham Lodge 809 or the Mulberry Grove Aces softball team.
