Michael D. Scroggins, Mike, died at his home late Wednesday afternoon. Mike is survived by his wife Fredna (Carlson) [31592, fb], son Matt [46692,] (Missy [46693]) of Chicago, IL, brother Larry [32933] (Sheila 32934]) of Pleasant Grove, Utah and many friends and former students.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Ken (Billy) Scroggins [32928] and Virginia Stiles Scroggins [31033].

Born December 27, 1942, Mike was a loving family man, committed teacher, talented musician and good friend. His teaching career spanned 37 years, beginning as a teaching assistant in mathematics at SIU Carbondale and formally ending after nearly 15 years as Professor of Mathematics at Lewis and Clark Community College. In between he taught in the Bethalto, IL, and O'Fallon, IL, school districts. Mike never truly retired from teaching.

A life long Democrat, Mike was a leader in the Illinois Education Association during his years in Bethalto and at Lewis and Clark Community College. While working as a professional musician Mike was a member of his local musician's union.

A celebration of Mike's life will be held at 12:30 on Sunday, August 26, in Pearson Hall at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 406 Hillsboro, Edwardsville, IL. A luncheon will follow.

In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to The Mike Scroggins' Jazz Scholarship Fund at the SIUE Foundation or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
