Albert T. Scroggins

COLUMBIA — A memorial service for Dr. Albert Taylor Scroggins, Jr., will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, 6500 N. Trenholm Road, Columbia. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Dr. Scroggins, 89, died Saturday, November 21, 2009. He was the son of the late Albert T. [14683] and Ella Lester Scroggins [14684]. A U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, he served in the South Pacific. He received a B.S. degree from Auburn University and a B.J., M.A. (English) and a Ph.D Degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri, where he was a graduate assistant in English and an assistant professor in Journalism. He headed the mass communications and campus publications programs and held academic positions at the University of South Florida, Southern Illinois University and Samford University. Dr. Scroggins was Dean of the College of Journalism at the University of South Carolina for 20 years and retired as Dean Emeritus of the college in 1985. At that time, he received the state’s highest honor, the Order of the Palmetto, and an honorary life membership in the South Carolina Broadcasters Association.

Dr. Scroggins headed several national, regional and state organizations. He served as President of Columbia Advertising Club, President of Columbia Media Club, President of Florida West Coast Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, Governor of the Third District of American Advertising Federation (SC, NC, and VA.), President of the Accredited Schools and Departments of Journalism, President of Alabama Public Relations Association and National President of Kappa Tau Alpha.

Dr. Scroggins was honored for his service by several organizations. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, the Silver Medal Award from Columbia Advertising Club, the Distinguished Service Award from Southern Interscholastic Press Association, an award named for him recognizing outstanding high school journalists by South Carolina Scholastic Press Association, the Third District American Advertising Federation’s Legion of Excellence Award. He was included in the Diamond Circle, which recognized 75 people for their service to the University of South Carolina College of Journalism and Mass Communication. He and his faculty were honored by the Secretary of the Army for designing the Advanced Army Public Affairs course. The University of South Carolina chapter of Kappa Tau Alpha was named in his honor in 2001. He cared deeply for his students and supported close relationships with the press, broadcasting and advertising professionals.

Dr. Scroggins was active in non-journalism activities and has served as chairman of the board of South Carolina Heart Association. He was active in his church, serving as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and on the Session as an Elder of the Forest Lake Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lilla W. Scroggins [54567]; daughters, Pamela S. Owings (Gregory C.), Deborah S. Goodson; four grandchildren, Christina O. Poissant (Adam), Erin O. Holland (Jason), Rachael G. Guice (Matthew), Jesse Goodson; great-grandson, Peyton Holland.

The Scroggins family would like to send their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Wildewood Downs Skilled Nursing Unit for the loving care they extended to Dr. Scroggins during his extended illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the building fund of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, 6500 N. Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29206 or the Albert T. Scroggins, Jr. Scholarship Fund at the University of South Carolina, 1244 Blossom St., Columbia, SC 29208.
