Frank Piety Scrogin

Nov. 19, 1910 — Feb. 15, 2009

Corvallis resident Frank Piety Scrogin died peacefully in his sleep at Conifer House Residential Care Facility.

He was born in Klamath Falls, where his parents, George Washington [3996:J; SP:H3] and Ray Piety Scrogin [4123:J], had come in search of good farmland. Finding none, they soon moved to Kansas and then to Bruceville, Ind., a town founded by his father’s ancestor William Bruce. In 1928, just after Frank’s graduation from high school, he drove with his parents and older brother from Indiana to Upland, Calif., crossing the Rocky Mountains.

Frank completed two years at Chaffee Junior College and found work in the Northern California timber industry, first in a box factory, and then in a sales office. On May 21, 1938, he married Hope Wallace Millar [20896:J], the sister of his older brother’s wife, in Upland, Calif.

At the end of World War II, the couple moved from Northern to Southern California, where Frank worked as a lumber salesman until his retirement in 1972. After building a home in Sonoma County, Frank planted a large garden, growing fruit trees, strawberries, vegetables, and native plants. He and Hope moved to Corvallis in 1986. He continued gardening on a smaller scale and volunteered at the public library. He enjoyed driving and took family members on extensive road trips across the West.

Frank was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Scrogin Power [17307:J], and a brother, Clifford Scrogin [17306:J]. Survivors include his wife, of Corvallis; one daughter, Margaret Scrogin Chang [20897:J], of Williamstown, Mass.; one granddaughter [40582:J]; three great-grandsons; and a niece and two nephews.

A celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 9, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 2945 N.W. Circle Blvd. in Corvallis, with Lay Minister Sheila Smith officiating.

Memorial contributions can be made to Benton County Hospice, 2350 N.W. Professional Drive, Corvallis 97330, or the Friends of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, 645 N.W. Monroe Ave., Corvallis 97330.

Interment is at Oak Lawn Cemetery, with DeMoss-Durdan Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
